How frustrating, still been using the original PS3 with every time I save or turn on, expecting the YLOD.

£2m exps from completing L40 on B-spec (one 24 hr Circ, or two 9 hours) and after having the PS3 on for pretty much 3 weeks solid, the disc drive goes.

Got to the end of an Endo Race and my X2010 just keeps on rolling round at 50mph. I could do nothing with the controller and couldn't even eject the disc so had to turn PS3 'off and on again'. Tried again and same thing happened (after having trouble loading the disc up).

Since then no disc works (game, blue-ray or DVD).

Presume it's a hardware problem and therefore needs to be fixed, but could it be a software issue, that could be rectified by an update or restore option.

Very upset. Would like to blame PD for making me grind and keep it on for weeks, but it was the Fat Lady PS3 at the same time.

Sorry to hear about your PS3 :( One thing though - no one FORCED you to leave it on for 3 weeks, especially when it was obvious what GT5 has been doing to the older PS3's.

Just hope you backed up your save data, can buy a slim PS3 and carry on near enough where you left off!

I really hate to reply to your message, but PD did force him to leave it on to complete the races how hard is that to see. If you don't leave it on you can't complete some races. And GT5 would not be completed. If the game is broken this is what has had to be done.

And the to the OP it is probably your drive. I still have a fatty and I will not leave mine on to play this game. Ofcourse I have never had any problems (knock on wood) When it gets fixed then I will complete GT5.

Uh no. PD did not make him keep his PS3 on for weeks at a time, I'm pretty sure he made that decision all on his own.

He even said it himself that he's been expecting YLOD.

Give your head a shake!

Which race takes 3 weeks to complete?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the OP just asking for advice, not a debate on whether PD makes people endlessly grind or not.

In response to the initial question; yes, it sounds like a harware issue. A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him, wouldn't read discs etc. Hardware.

I had an old "fatty" that gave up the ghost long before GT5 came around. We mainly used it as a blu-ray player for movies. I don't think they were built as good as the knew slim design. We have 3 slim PS3's in the house now and so far so good.

Ive got a first gen too. Im so worried about the YLOD (knock on wood) that Ive bult a fan to blow cool air in, and pull hot air out. Also the longest its ever been on is 9.5 hours straight. I also try not to randomly cut it on and off....the thermal glue is supposedly the case of these things crapping out, and the thermal glue tends to crack from turning on and off a lot (think hot, cold, hot, cold)

2 weeks ago the disc drive of my fat ps3 died while playing gt5. I went to a repair shop and they changed the laser lens. It's now working fine, but I'm still afraid it's going to fail miserably again. I don't have any confidence in these chinese spare parts.

Sorry to hear mate! My B-spec grinding days are long over , but the longest I left my phat going was about 2 weeks. I had no problems at all with it the fan barely ever kicked over into the second speed and this was right in the middle of a hot Aussie summer! The key is just good ventilation and keep dust out. I found just a hair dryer and a vacuum cleaner did the job :D

Loved the title by the way :)

I have a first Gen PS3 (60Gb), which is ON the entire time.

Being able to use PlayTV in Spain like a DVR, my ps3 is running days without end.
I am exagerating a bit but let´s say ever night it´s running 6 hours and in the weekends it´s running 16 hours straight.

It even gets worse, sometimes I put PlayTV on, set to record any type of movie or program and then I go play GT5.

I never experienced a problem, okay, sometimes the ps3 is blowing a lot of hot air, but hey, that´s why it has vents, right?!

Nevertheless, I pray from time to time that my Fatty won´t die on me, but honestly I don´t understand the fuss about running the ps3 fat 24 hours straight with only GT5 running. Like I told you guys, mine runs GT5 and is recording movies etc at the same time.

Just wanted to let you know...

Greetz

Report me or not, I don't care, but everyone who plays those endurance races, especially those insane 24h races, are just plane stupid.

You risk both your health and your hardware. I, too, own a fat launch 60GB PS3 and I am aware of the risk that the old hardware may fail sooner or later, that's why I skip those Endos.

First, blame yourself and be thanfull that your health is still in good shape then blame PD for implementing those insane Endo races.

Now report me for calling you stupid.

I have a fat PS3, it YLOD me about 2 years ago, it was within warranty but I don't live in the US so the shipping to Sony would cost me a new PS3, so I just google how to fix the thing and it was a very easy fix.

I only spend 5 bucks for arctic silver thermal compound and a 20min fix, the PS3 hasn't had a problem ever since.

What the OP describes sounds like a faulty Bluray lens, it was a common occurrence on the fat PS3, he could change the bluray drive or the lens like a previews poster did to get it working again.

Many of the endurance races are a lot of fun, try the 4h nurburgring race in something competitive...you have to risk loosing to stop it being a time trial. I've had great fun doing this race - after all, it's only 27 laps :D

Waiting on the save patch for the 9h/24h races...

Play the ball not the person. Calling people stupid is playing the man and that's a no go here. Let's leave it at that shall we.

- A well ventilated PS3 can run for several days without any issues.
- My health is perfectly fine and I have run several 24 hour enduros in A-Spec in GT4 and GT5.

Mine stopped reading discs just before xmas so being as it was out of warranty i figured i had nothing to lose by pulling it apart & seeing if the laser/lens whatever it is was dirty. Drop of mr muscle window cleaner on a cotton bud & its as good as new :D

Other than a 2 week break when I have been on vacation, and a pair of weeks when I was in the hospital for surgery, my PS3 has been on for 3 years.

I have been constantly running GT5 since it was released. When I wasn't playing, bob was doing laps.

As for the enduros, they are the most fun in the game to me, so I will risk my health to enjoy them.

What I was saying was that to complete this game it is no secret that you will have to have your ps3 on for longer periods than what is acceptable by most.

I apologize for not making it more clear the first time and for going off of the subject. I was mainly talking about the times your ps3 has to be on to just complete championships, which is something that I shouldn'th have done.

Remember guys, preventive maintenance can go a long way.

- Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out the vents, as this could be trapping hot air inside the console.

- Quit games through the XMB, THEN shut your console off. This keeps the CD from spinning freely while there is no power to the drive, possibly sparing damage.

- The console was build for extended playtime, as shows it has support for folding@home, but anything over 24 hours without a short break might wear it down.

- Clean behind your ears.

Dude you may have YLOD'd yourself! You have to be careful because sometimes what you think is freezing, is actually something Loading and if the Orange Light is on when you shut off PS3, you are more apt to get a YLOD message. Try running the auto diagnostic feature.

Leaving it on for 3 weeks didn't do any harm unless it wasn't in a well ventilated area.

All very good advice. Except I don't use compressed air because it can push the dust into the vents, thus into the ps3.

I like to use a small vacuum cleaner and pull the dust from the vents. Every Sunday when I clean.

Guys, to all those who have given helpful tips, or shared my woes :guilty:, I thank you all. There are some very helpful things that I may try here. :)

To those (few) of you who obviously just scour the threads to look at having a pop at someone for no reason, and be rude, grow up. Oh, and some of these few need to read what OP's are actually getting at.

Thanks again to the majority of you though - this site is as helpful as always :)
