LONDON — Police on Thursday arrested another former News of the World executive in connection with the phone hacking scandal at the tabloid owned by Rupert Murdoch, police and reports said.

Scotland Yard would not confirm his identity but said a 60-year-old man was arrested by officers at a residential address in London early on Thursday "on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications"

Please discuss.

Damn! I was hoping that it was Murdoch himself that was arrested!

Not an arrest, but another very important resignation. I expect he's looking for a good lawyer!

Les Hinton, the chief operating officer of Dow Jones, which publishes The Wall Street Journal, is resigning, the newspaper's website said late Friday.

Word of Hinton's resignation comes amid an unprecedented wave of scandals that has rocked News Corporation's British newspaper holdings, forcing the resignation of News International CEO Rebekah Brooks earlier this morning.

Hinton is the former chief of News International, which oversees global media mogul Rupert Murdoch's British newspapers.

As one of Murdoch's top deputies for over 50 years, Hinton oversaw the News Corp. subsidiary while a number of its papers were allegedly engaging in phone hacking and bribery, targeting British officials, celebrities, terrorist attack victims, the families of dead soldiers and others.

He's on record as claiming just one of the company's journalists was responsible for the phone hacking, which he allegedly determined after an internal investigation.

And to think only about week ago they said her job was secure and she was the one who was going to conduct the internal investigation!

The way things are going Murdoch might be the next in jail!

That's cronyism for you. In Ireland it's quite commonplace...

*crosses fingers*

Gee whiz, now London's police chief has resigned!

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has resigned following the phone hacking scandal.

Britain's most senior police officer has faced criticism for hiring former News of the World executive Neil Wallis - who was questioned by police investigating hacking - as an adviser.

Sir Paul said his links to the journalist could hamper investigations.

Here's a picture of Rebekah Brooks being led away by police officers.

Did Wikileaks have anything to do with revealing this stuff?

It all kicked off with this:

November 2005:
The News of the World publishes a story on a knee injury suffered by Prince William, Queen Elizabeth's grandson and second in line to the throne. That prompts complaints by officials of the royal court about voicemail messages being intercepted. The complaints spark a police inquiry.

Here's a timeline:

If this does go all the way to Cameron and he loses his job, I can't say I'll be disappointed.
I can't believe how huge this has been revealled to be though.

^ agree and agree.

BBC 2 tomorrow 19th July at 2pm. The Daily Politics Special - Andrew Neil presents live coverage of Rupert Murdoch, his son James and Rebekah Brooks giving evidence to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on phone hacking.

Should be interesting!

A second senior officer in command at the met has now quit and and the scandals whistle blower has been found dead... You seriously couldn't make this stuff up! The BBC did a really good recap on Panorama earlier. The committee meeting should make some interesting viewing tomorrow.

I tell you there's going to be no one left in central London, they'll all be banged up

Still trying to cover their tracks?

ARRESTING former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks shortly before she gave evidence to a Commons inquiry has been described as ‘convenient’ by Torbay MP Adrian Sanders.

Mr Sanders, who sits on the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee, was among those to question the timing of the move by police.

“Quite why now, just a few hours before our select committee meets, an arrangement has been made for an arrest. A lot of people are going to think this is very, very odd.

“If this is designed to take the spotlight off the police at the same time giving a shield to Rebekah Brooks, that's a very serious matter indeed.

This thing is relentless and it hasn't even got out of first gear in the US. "Dodgy Dave" is safe at the moment but if this keeps running who knows what other skeletons will be revealed.

David Cameron must be bricking it about now, although I think he is probably safe for now... it is a tad ironic watching Murdoch etc. being hounded by the paparazzi... maybe it will give them a taste of what it's like to have your privacy invaded, although not nearly to the extent that others have been violated.

The Sun is being attacked by LulzSec. They managed to make the front page redirect to another page which said Murdoch had died but now that got taken down, they are getting it to redirect to their twitter page. They have leaked a staffs login and password and are doing maybe damage to the The Sun's databases and files. They should have a backup though. Quite impressive they managed to do someone like this, it is like the stuff people used to be able to do over a decade ago.

Go back another ten years and they'd have had to physically break in to the Sun's offices to pull that sort of stunt!

First time I heard of the existence of the british tabloid News of the World was here, in gtplanet, and therefore I always connected that newspaper's name to the name of the then head of the FIA, Max Mosley.

I understand people in Britain are focused on the domestic political implications of all this. All I want to know, however, is ... "Who Framed Max Mosley?" :D You guys from the UK think we will ever know this?

A lot of what they printed against Max Mosely was incorrect, which allowed Max Mosley to sue the paper. I'm sure Max is delighted about this news.

Want to know what I find most scary about all of this?
Sean Hoares mysteriously died the other day. Police say his death was unexplained but not suspicious! Not suspicious?!?! WTF?!?!

I wonder if people will forget about this as quickly as they forgot about Dr David Kelly?
Um, you do realise that that particular website sells itself as "UK Spoof News and Satire", right?

There is no conspiracy.

There is no conspiracy.

Yes, I know the article isn't very objective, but I chose to link to that one because it's the only one I can find which raises the issue of there being even the slightest possibility of a conspiracy. Just because there is no evidence, it doesn't mean there isn't a conspiracy. Surely you must realise that there probably wouldn't be any evidence if one of the most powerful men in the world paid a lot of money to a highly experienced assassin to kill him. And even if there was evidence, consider the possibility that one of the worlds most powerful men could easily have made that evidence disappear. If this phone hacking scandle has proven anything, it is that British police are highly susceptible to bribary and corruption at the highest level. Have you been following this story? You also have to look at circumstances and motive. If someone is undoubtedly wanted dead by one of the worlds most powerful men, then he suddenly dies, after telling everyone that he fears for his life... well... I think I've made my point. I think it's pretty crazy just to say "there is no conspiracy" because there is no hard evidence. I'm obviously not saying there is, because I can't prove it. I'm just saying it looks extremely suspicious.

It's 4.15am for me. I've got to go to bed. I'll see if you've replied when I wake up.

Rumours are that Murdoch is being encouraged to cut the paper (and possibly other UK - probably tabloid - operations) loose. It's a wait-and-see gig at the moment, I guess...
