Still Learning: I've read the threads on the G25, DFP, & now the EX. What about the little ol Logitech Driving Force for GT4 withe a Sony PS2 game platform?
The DF wheel has the best layout, overall, for any wheel to use with PlayStation games and chances are you will never again see another one like it. The reason for praising this model is that the PS buttons and D-pad are on the wheel rim
exactly where they should be, right within easy reach, without having to search for them on a wheel spoke. No other Logitech wheel has had this design since and probably never will again, because their top-end wheels are also PC compatible now. It ain't going to happen.
The combination of the PS button layout and the big "Dumbo-ear" paddles, at a reasonable cost, make this wheel the best bargain going, without exception, if you can find a new one. Its layout will spoil you once you understand its concepts.
Do other, more expensive, wheels have other advantages?
Of course, but none can compare to the DF's great design.
Is it durable & does it have all the functions to make GT4 as usable as with the standard game controller.
The DF wheel works fine with GT3 or GT4, but not earlier versions of GT.
Unfortunately, the quality of the wheel is poor compared to more recent wheels. It has a few durability problems, including a steering column that starts to wiggle once it gets used for a while, and pedals and a D-pad that can break with relative ease. You also don't want to whack the steering column against the turning stops when getting excited. Because you can still buy a few DF wheels new (for around $25), they are to be your first choice over used ones. If you find used ones, check them over
very closely, especially for a loose steering column and cracked/split/broken pedals or D-pad. You might find two with which you can make one good wheel, for little money.
The newer EX wheel still uses some of the same DF parts, including the pedal box, but the PS buttons are now on the wheel spokes. At least Logitech improved the durability of the EX's D-pad, even though the paddles are small switches, as with the Pro model.
Although I haven't tried it yet with GT or GT2, the EX wheel is supposed to be the most compatible wheel with all PS and PS2 racing games, and I believe it takes care of one GT3 menu compatibility problem.
Cheers,
