Hey Guys!

I've been DJ'in since the begging end 2013 but i really took it in seriousness in 2014. I started off with a Pioneer DDJSX, and moved up to a DDJSZ last spring, and now i just traded the SZ, for two brand new XDJ1000's. And ill be buying a DJM900 Nexus for the Mixer. I've been working at a production company as a DJ since August of 2014, DJ'in for Colleges, and Middle/High Schools, and next year ill be starting weddings... Oh Boy.

Anyone else a DJ here? How long have you been DJ'in for? What kind of equipment have you been using?

I know i made a thread like last year but i wasnt going to revive it...

Yes, I am DJ......

I have been buying Electronic music CDs since 1990 and I've been mixing with them since 1997 using these....

And Hopefully before the year is up, I will be upgrading to this.....CDJ850s x2 + DJM750s

I have just over 1200 CDs and countless WAV, FLAC, and MP3 files on my external hard-drives, pretty much all of it is 80s-90s music. I don't play anything past 2002.

I don't need a sync button!. 👍 :D

Woah! Nice gear you have ther bro! And also, yeah sync annoys me. Its disabled on my controller. Sync Button takes away the awesome feeling of using the Pitch.

The long needed upgrade is completed.....

I went with the Black [k] set instead of the sliver set because I found it at a much, MUCH cheaper price. In-fact, with the added HDJ-1500k and the flightcase it was still £25 less than the cheapest I could find the Silver set for.

Party time! :D

I've spent a lot of time experimenting with DAW's like FL Studio last summer, but since then work has caught up to me. I'd love to get back into it and actually start making mixes and unique productions, but its hard to get motivated when you're working 9 to 9.

It's hard for me to practice my mixing since College, i get back home, completely exhausted from classes, but i need to study, and do homework. Blah

I DJ too. But not like that. I am in school for Broadcast Communications. :D

So, I spin my words and bouce a couple pots. I will hopefully be getting largely into production part of the radio business. That is what I plan for the future. :)

Used to heaps, now just occasionally. Prefer vinyl, but stopped buying records about 3 years ago.

*Head nods to music beat* Yeah yeah yeah!

How this gig of yours been going dude? Been doing a lot of shows lately?

I am assuming you do a lot of new pop music and hip hop? If so, how does it feel to have to keep your mind open learning the new hits from month to month?

Hip Hop? I'm far from a hip-hop dude. :P. I'm mostly in EDM, and yeah the normal pop for middle school lol, And its been quiet quiet this fall. Not many gigs, This gig in the pic above was quite. It was a ball for the Luge Guys and Galls. I did a Halloween dance for Middle and High School, when the high school gig ended, everyone was sweating. :D

Haha. That is awesome mate. :D

Keep them kids active and healthy. Or they will end up 30 lbs. overweight playing video games all the time like me.

Nice Job. 👍

Always good to get yourself into too, it keeps your audience confident. (Check out the dude dancing by himself right in the middle of the floor.)

I showed it to my gf and the first thing she said was "Look at that dude!" I was mixing in Pursuit of Happiness those two songs basically kept the crowd then they all left. Was the whole night in a nutshell of 3 hours barely danced much.

We are dancers.
Some DJs know this instinctively and can control a crowd on the floor like a master puppeteer.
My younger bro is a full time DJ (has a partner) and they do 8 - 10 gigs a month - weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and so on and I've also been an invitee at a couple of the functions they've deejayed; t's amazing how well they tune in to the crowd and not only get them on the floor but keep them there.

I am a small time radio personality. Actually I am a big deal. But not really. :P

That's actually quite an exciting job - one would think that no one listens to the radio anymore . but the truth is the internet has actually helped radio - become radio. So many feeds, streams, and sites devoted to radio (my bro has his own station too and a fair chunk of subscribers.)
Because radio can be interactive (unlike Youtube videos) it has more opportunity for entertainment.

I was listening to the 24/7 Christmas Channel today in Toronto - 98.1 CHFI - and they run this contest where people can call for gift bags to be opened and they contain sums of money (the jackpot is $10,000.00).

People open one bag (they do this over the phone while on line with the station) - there's like a couple of hundred dollars, then they go for another - there may be 5 or 6 hundred (it keeps adding up) but if the next bag they open is a 'bomb' it sets the 'FAIL' buzzer off and all the money is lost.
Usually people go for three or four bags and quit while they are ahead - mostly getting away with something under a grand.
Some people go for 5 or 6 bags and instead of taking off with the couple of grand they have they keep playing and it all blows up.

The guy today hit the jackpot!
Ten thousand smackaroos - and man, the announcers just kept me riveted - I guess everyone tuned in were holding their breath as the announcer kept egging this guy on and he kept taking the challenge and opening bags and went all the way to the last bag safely.
Tense.
Good radio people have rapport and some of it is remote - rapport with that invisible audience out there.
Play Misty for me? ;)

To be honest, i kind of stopped listening to the Radio, because the music played now is horrendous. I spend a lot of my time building new sets, listening to sets from other DJ's, and browsing Youtube, and Soundcloud to find something new. Just the new songs pumping out on the radio just has no meaning to it. Just 90% is stupid songs, which make no sense, and repetitive, and suck to dance too. And i just hate mixing it in.

Check out Wild Youth, By Steve Angello.

Radio is one thing, music another. I agree that a lot of the modern music is just white noise; archetypal rhythms and tones, lyrics that are rhetoric or jargon, themes that are lame at best. But there are all types of music - not just the mainstream ambiance-mixes that are marketed as the 'latest hit' (the one the youngsters must be listening to or else you're 'out of the loop') but lots of classical, jazz, hip-hot, C & W, Rock - and these are only some of the western music genres (music exists all over the world.)
Music is only a part of radio.
There are a lot of great radio stations out there that keep you informed - from the moment you wake up; about the latest slaughter, gas prices and that it's a snow day - to the moment you go to sleep (some interview with a doctor that says blue light is killing our younger folk.)
Radio is more than music.

Spinning discs at a dance is another thing altogether.
Obviously, it pays to have a good mic personality - but it's also vitally important to know what crowd you are playing to. I wouldn't play Doobie Bros at a rave, or Ariana Grande at the Old Folks home.
And, yes, breaking rhythm is the cardinal sin.

I spend a lot of my time building new sets, listening to sets from other DJ's, and browsing Youtube, and Soundcloud to find something new.

You'll find out eventually that canned moods don't work as well as spontaneous combustion. ;)

Thing is I live in the Mountains, where there's one radio station and its utter crap. Repeats those hit songs over and over again :grumpy:. My main inspiration for being a better DJ for sure was Steve Angello. And I agree, for sure there's good radio stations.

It's quite funny when people expect me to be a radio. Yep doesn't works that way. Radio DJ, and Club, Dance, Wedding DJ 2 complete different things. And people don't understand that :/

True - very hard to actually find good radio today - especially if you're the proverbial man on the mountain.

City folk are a little more lucky - in Toronto we have a huge spread across the dial - something for everyone.

Yes, a disc spinner is quite different to a mic-handler. Most radio announcers have no influence at all on the compilation - a producer does that.
Whereas with a dance-floor DJ, it's the insta-compilation that matters. You have to talk to them through your music, and even through the moves you make on stage. There's nothing like a live, pumping DJ behind the mixer.

I no longer use soundcloud either, but here are a few mixes of mine you can download/listen... they are hosted on mediafire... 👍
