Hey guys, my 32" Sony went out on me earlier this week. Basically, the picture flickered, then "collapsed" into the single white dot in the center of the screen. Now when I hit power, there's nothing, nada.

I have a repair guy coming out to the house to look at it today.... anything I need to be on the look out for? I've never had a TV fixed before.

Thanks much in advance.

Well it turns out Sony TVs, once disassembled, are made primary of dust. That was mostly what I saw anyway.

He futzed around with the power supply, which did nothing. Then he soldered something on the vertical-whachmadoodle and lo an behold, it worked!

Picture is stable and still beautiful. Good thing I didn't decide to replace the whole thing with a 50" projection.

....I think.. :odd:

Oh well, maybe next year.

I was about to say it sounds like the verticle hold on your TV went out. That's what TV repairmen always say. They said it with us when the Panasonic went out about five years ago.

How much did it cost to fix? Don't they usually cost alot? Usually when stuff breaks I'm happy as heck because it give me a chance to buy something better :D unless of course its somethign like my car, or playstation or something....

I have a $1,200 32" JVC that is roughly 3 years old that recently flaked out and did the small line across the screen routine. I figured it was the picture tube so I replaced it with a brand new 36".

Hmm.. This motivates me to get the old one checked out.

The labor was a flat rate of $100 for in home service. He said if parts were needed, they typicaly run less than $100, depending on the part and model. He told me if the vertical hold-thingy needed to be replaced, it was about $55 for the part.

All and all, not bad. Worth it if you have a quality set.

That's close to what it cost me to repair the Panasonic. Around $160.00 dollars.
