I have made the transition my friend, it is a very good thing.
I used to be a DS3 drift racer, I was convinced I was faster with a little sliding through corners. I got a DFGT (Edit: *facepalm* DFGT not a DFP) for Christmas. At first it was very difficult and discouraging to be 2 seconds off my previous times. But my style developed, I find it difficult to countersteer effectivley with the force feedback and suchlikes. I am now a much smoother and faster driver thanks to my wheel. My racing is much more immersive now, because I am not sliding around I can form a rhythm much easier and become in tune with the car and the track without any crazy drifts. Basically just persevere, once you think you have become okay with the slower cars (Honda Integra is good) then progress up the cars and play with different tyres. I reached a point where I could drive nothing faster than a GTR however I have practiced and now I can handle any car, apart from the F2007 I still spin a little too much. I found that you can find a level of grip with how much you are turning the wheel. I can control my speed by turning the wheel more or less, how much you steer is a lot more important than it first seems. Anyway, I am rambling. Persevere and the rewards will come. 'Good things come to those who wait'.
