Anyone else just getting into GT4? (Sept 2011)

Hi all.

I'm new to this forum b/c I'm new to the world of GT.

For the longest time, I avoided even getting a game console b/c I knew what would happen; I'd get totally sucked in! And sure enough...

My price of admission was $35;

$20 for a PS2 w/one memory card
$10 for a good used copy of GT4
$5 for an early Force Feedback wheel and petals (the older blue one with only paddle shifter)

But just last weekend (after a month or-so of playing), I bought a new in box Force Feedback Pro 900 degree wheel for $30 off CL. I actually wore the old blue one out--it developed too much play for the faster LM cars.

Anyway, just hoping to do my part to keep this GT4 forum from becoming a ghost town and to let ya'll know that the game can still be fresh and new for someone.

Am I alone with this "it's all new to me" status?

(It's OK if I am. Just checking)

Welcome aboard! I just started playing myself a year ago. It can certainly keep you busy for a while. There is plenty of room for development or exploration. I just wish that at some point when you unlocked stuff it was available for purchase instead of being prize only, that is one of my nit picks.

I am getting into it again. Used to play it alot though back a few years. Started fresh and I have passed all the driving challenges and all the licences by silver. Driving challenge 34 did not take very long to do because I know the track so well from GT5. I love challenge and that's where the fun lies at for me. When playing GT4 though there's a certain "dead" feeling to it. Im not sure if it's just me who gets this or not, I can't really explain it but I hate it.
I still think GT4 is the best game ever made though. Although it feels like a backward step from GT5 (only 5 opponents when racing, graphics) it gives the player a sense of freedom which GT5 just doesn't have.

I decided to pick up my dad's copy of GT3 about 2 years ago, and maybe 9-12 months ago I picked up the Greatest Hits version of GT4 for $4 or $5 at the local pawn shop. My first ~60%, ~6000 A-Spec gamesave for GT4 involved a lot of races that were worth less than 10 points. I partially B-Spec'd the 24 hour Nurnburg in a fully modified Chapparal 2D, got the Formula Gran Turismo, and got gold in 10 or 11 races in the FGT championship, and won that one. Shortly after finding this wonderful site, I decided to start over on another memory card and make all the races more interesting. On that save I have roughly 30 or 40% of the game completed with ~12k A-Spec points. That was probably one of the best decisions I ever made in this game.

Funny you should mention this on the exact same day that I myself bought a used PS2 and GT4. :)

I bought it partly because I missed the old tracks like Citta di Aria, Midfield, El Capitan and so on, and partly because I never played the game very much. I just finished around 10% of it I think. It's really fun to play. Actually slightly more fun than GT5 but it's a close race, although the driving experience itself (physics, graphics) is clearly better in GT5. But GT4 is still very fun.

I will be playing it alongside GT5 from now on. I do hope however that some of the old tracks will come as DLC for GT5. Just think how Citta would look in HD!

Oh, and I use a G25. Works like a charm. :)

Just dug up GT4 and GT3 A-spec from an old desk drawer

Now starting GT4 on a PS3 and revisiting Hong Kong, New York, Seattle, El Capitan, etc. and loving it. Much more of a challenge than GT5 in terms of advancing through the early parts of the game.

1080 output also still seems to be only semi-HD but what should I expect?

OP here.

So cool to see this game still going fairly strong even after all the years and the introduction of GT5/PS3.

I'm about 56% through GT4 now and am still totally hooked! It's the only PS2 game in the world, IMO.

It is very cool to see this forum still going strong. I passed on getting a PS3 and GT5, and, after reading about both, I am glad I did.

The PS2 still rocks, and I use a Logitech G25...I'm still enjoying GT4 after buying it when it was first released, having had GT3, GT2 and the original versions.

By the way, I am 62 years old, and I have several friends at or near my age that have PS2 and GT4/G25 setups...we always compare times.

To keep it real, we do no tuning, all aids off, and use road tires.

Great forum you have here...thanks for keeping it going.
