Anyone Gone back and Played Shift?

I came very close to returning the game too, but I still have It. I played It again a while back, and there is many things to like, and a lot not to like. It seems some cars are just no good to use in this game, and others are quite reasonable. Are there any cars to recommend ? I definitely will give another try before Shift 2 arrives, any thoughts on which cars to avoid and which not ? If I remember correctly, the Porsche GT3(?) was quite good. Somehow knowing all the work that has been done for the physics in Shift 1, although levelled out in the end, makes me curious again.

I like to drive the Maserati MC12, Pagani Zonda R, BMW M3 GT2, Porsche GT2 (I think, it's a bonus car you receive), Alfa Romeo 8C (I have upgraded it and changed the setup and it now handles much better), Mclaren MP4-12C. Occasionally I like to drive a Lamborghini Murcielago, Dodge Viper Coke-Zero car (it's a bonus car for an old online competition) but the good thing is that all cars are available in quick race mode so you can test them easily until you find your favorite. It's true that some cars feel weird (I remember the last time I tried Ford GT wasn't good, I may try it again). But once in a while you may like to drive a new car. The other day I had great fun in the unforgiving Mclaren F1. :D

But mainly I drive the Maserati MC12 and Pagani Zonda R. 👍

I can't WAIT for Shift 2. I'm going to have SO much fun trolling the GT forums like they trolled Shift's, and rub their faces in just how GOOD the entire game is, not JUST the physics and the Nordschliese... :sly:

I seem to remember you made a few posts about how GT5 was totally going to crush shift over in the ea forums too :)

It will be a computer game. It will do some things well. It will do some things less well. Some bugs they will add, some bugs they will remove.

TBH I think the main obstacle for any console driving game is that there are a number of things you could do a lot better than GT5 or Forza, which, if you go and put them in your game, a lot of people will interpret as crappy handling. Even with all the bugs in Shift I'd say it was only about coin toss odds as to whether people would pick out something that was an actual bug or something that was a great feature as rotten handling. So that part should be fun :)

It's really too bad that I'm the only one here in these forums that have completed Shift in its entirety, including ALL the career modes, ALL the invitational events, collected ALL the stars and have ALL the MASTER Badges. You guys should really play the game, and see if you can top that :) Otherwise, I'm not too sure if you have the right to comment on the single player game :(

I can't tell if you're serious or not.

For starters, I guarantee you're not the only one, just that other people don't feel the need to brag about it. And some of the stars are for ridiculous things, like spinning people out. I don't see how that makes you better qualified to comment on a game than anyone else.

That's what I think too. GT and Forza have become the benchmark on each respective console that other sim-games are judged. And although both (I haven't tried Forza) are decent simulations they are not the be-all, end-all ultimate simulations their fans and game-reviewers make them to be. In my opinion both games make motor-sport look sterile and not-at-all dangerous which is completely wrong. 👎

I am afraid that if Richard Burns Rally, GP Legends or other PC-Sims were released on PS3 or 360 many would accuse them of being arcade because they wouldn't be able to control them. Both the games I mentioned completely nail the feeling that motor-sport is dangerous and make you think twice before accelerating since the slightest mistake would result in a huge crash that would destroy your race (and not the oh-so-realistic elastic crashes, armco-riding or use-other-cars-to-turn of GT series).

I believe that was the feeling Shift developers were trying to achieve in Shift 1 and in my opinion they did a pretty good job although a bit flawed. I am hopeful they will completely nail it in Shift 2. :)

Go back and do it again two more times, and you MIGHT have something to brag about. Finished the game once with a pad, once with a wheel, and once more got to 40M cr. and a 30:1 win/loss ratio ONLY playing online. By your reasoning, that gives YOU no right to comment on the game, and yet, here you are, doing it.

Grow up, sonny...

ROTFL.....Destinkeys, relax my friend, I was kidding around. No bragging here. I honestly suck at the game :D But even though I typed that message with lighthearted intentions and in jest, I was starting to get a little worried that I was surrounded by people that didn't complete the game 100%. So I decided to do a little reverse psychology to get some of you to come forward lol :D Yes I still suck at the game, but I enjoy reading other people's experience with the career mode, and hearing them say they beat it satisfies me. Hence the sarcastic post :)

Decided to download Shift for $15 (a price of going to movies on the weekend), while I wait for Shift2 and I'll try installing the Overhaul Mod 1.45, which will hopefully improve physics. Should be fun.

We're just about to launch 2.0 this weekend or monday at the latest I hope. It is about as big a leap from 1.45 as 1.45 was from 1.2. We changed a LOT of stuff, I don't think there is one single physics component left unmolested at this point :)

Sounds good! Hopefully I can figure out how to install this thing before you guys release 2.0 :) I think I've got everything I need though. BFF tool, JSGME, and the mod itself. boxox, after unpacking the "base package" in the "MODS" folder, do I need to do anything else, if I want to keep the driver's hands visible, or is that it? Thanks!

You should apply the DLC cars and tracks conversion first, the DLC cars thread has pictures of what to expect :)

But, yep, de-bff the game using the shiftunpack.bat autounpacker, run JSGME in your shift folder, let it make a "MODS" folder, copy the components of overhaul you want into a \mods\overhaulbeta\ folder, apply that mod folder in JSGME, run shift with "shift.exe -loose" parameter in the shortcut.

I am working on some ways to cut down the complexity of this for 2.0 (eg just running it as a set of numbered mod folders which make it clear what-replaces-what and all of which can just be applied in jsgme) but man making the install package is easily my least favourite part of putting out a release version. However much hassle people think it is to install it's 10x worse actually checking that any of those options will do what they say and not break stuff :)

Holy crap, I just went and put this back in my PS3 for the sake of trying it again. 20 seconds into the first race and I've got a huge grin on my face. Something about a furious Carrera GT vs. a McSLR 722 is super awesome.

Fantastic.

You can, but there are several bugs in it (about ~20 cars just aren't working as they should including one that will CTD the game) and to get several hud/wheel rotation options working you will need to copy it over the top of an assembled 1.45 install.

Yeah, shouldn't be too long I hope, though it has blown out about a week and a half over what we intended (and I meant to get a couple of other mods out by now too :)). It creates some pretty intense data management and testing issues doing what we're doing. There are basically ~1400 modded files, ~400 new files we add, and 16 different combinations for control settings with about 190 files each a person might choose to install :)

boxox, I want to give some feedback to your mod. First when I tried it out, the game still didnt feel right and something about it was off. It was better than stock, for sure, but not perfect, specifically with FFB. Then I decided to throw the optional dinput8.dll to see if it improves the game's feel, drove one lap and ran here to type this message up. I think you should make it mandatory, not optional! This dll improves the game MASSIVELY! Now I can actually play it and enjoy it properly. Phew! So much better! You cannot imagine. I'm loving it now. I'm not sure why it was decided to make it optional, to me it seems a requirement to enjoy the game. Anyway, just my feedback. Now back to playing :)

Hmm, lots of people have reported the exact opposite of that, we were actually intending to remove the file for next version since nobody seemed to report it made anything better :). Can I ask what wheel you're using?

Re the mod, it's very important to re-set your wheel settings to defaults (options > gameplay > controls (not "adjust controls"), press '2'). And re-set any owned cars to their default setup in tuning (press 'c'). It can get pretty weird if you don't :)

Well, I started the game with this mod right away, so I don't think I had to go through these steps, right? I didn't really own any cars (except for the DLC ones). I have DFGT wheel and this dll made heaps of difference to me, it got the game pretty close to GT5 handling and force feedback.

The thing that's important is what's in your player profile more than what you have installed in the game folder. If you've started a brand new profile you shouldn't need to reset any cars to their defaults, but I would still double check that you're using the controller profiles that come with the mod. So eg. just double check it by selecting keyboard/mouse as the control option, hit '2', then move the selection over to 'DFGT separate pedals' and hit '2' on that. This is one of those things where there are some cases where you might potentially not need to do it, but supporting the mod is just a lot easier if everyone understands they ought to do it :)

When we change controller behaviour files (the files in \shift\ControllerDefaults\PC\) they don't automatically get sucked up into your player profile. The only thing that is guaranteed to put the controller file in your player profile is selecting one and hitting the default button on it. The stock DFGT separate pedals profile in the game is broken and we fix a couple of bugs in it, so if it's acting weird that would be the first thing I would check.

I tried the reset, but I guess it didn't have any effect, so I guess everything was fine to begin with. One question, is it possible to play online with the mods or you have to go back to the original state of the game?

You can, but there are a lot of issues you can run into doing it. You are best off making a VLAN game using tunngle or similar with other people using the mod. There is essentially no real file validation on EA Online and hosting a game using cars people don't have installed can cause them to crash.

I recently started playing Shift again on ps3, its not as bad as I remember actually. It's just that some cars are absolutely horrific while others are a joy. The koenigsegg for example, terrible steering issues etc. But the Porsche carrera GT, Porsche GT3 etc, around spa - so much fun. The career is seriously easy to get back into, and lack of a free run or offline photo ability means sessions are short but sweet.

Now saying all that, I still find that if I'm happy to drive race cars, from gt1 to LMP, then gtr2 with mods is the daddy. Every time I go back to this game I get thrills, it just smashes gt5 in most areas. Sad really, considering how long I waited for gt5.

The GT3RS/RSR are probably as close to an unbugged car as exists in the whole stock game. RSR only has the brake bias bug, GT3RS only has the brake bias bug and the drivetrain upgrade bug if you upgrade it. Other than that they're about as close to a properly modelled car as it gets.

One thing this game could use though is longer events. Driving a total of 2 laps per race is a joke. I think 4-5 laps is a minimum to make things interesting. If it's a 1v1 race I can see how it can be 2 laps, but when you are racing against 7 or more other cars, should be more laps. Did they say anything about Shift2 in this regard, like increasing the number of laps?
