Anyone Gone back and Played Shift?

I recently started playing Shift again on ps3, its not as bad as I remember actually. It's just that some cars are absolutely horrific while others are a joy.

I love just hotlapping with my near-stock MX-5. There are some instances where the game really shines, despite the "rushedness" of the game. I'm hoping SMS can really pull it together for Shift 2.

boxox, I know you've said in the other thread about Shift2 that in Shift1 the tuning settings actually did the wrong thing. Can you elaborate on that? If I start messing around with the setups in the game I'm going to get unexpected results or does the Overhaul take care of that? Thanks.

I found, on the console side, that several of the Reward cars were a delight to drive. The BMW, the Porsche and the (so far unsung) Aston Martin DBR all handled very well, and were my favorites to set up for One Class racing. It just goes to show that, bugs nonetheless, it WAS possible to coax decent handling from Shift 1's game. Trouble was, just how BAD most of the default tunes were.

One thing that SMS have said is that some of their 'tame' race drivers would be setting up the default settings this time round, so racing Stock ought to be a FAR less frustrating experience.

I seem to remember you made a few posts about how GT5 was totally going to crush shift over in the ea forums too :)

At the details that I was primarily concerned about, GT5 actually DID crush Shift 1. The physics, of course, are far better, and the wheel FFB is also far better, and Lobby creators CAN set damage mode for all contestants. What I DIDN'T expect to happen was PD completely losing their minds about taking those details and creating a GAME that people would enjoy...!

Shift 2 promises repairs to most of the things I hated about the game (though I have yet to hear much about Lobby creation rules and mandatory damage, etc.) and I hope don't nerf as much as GT5 did. Initially, I was skeptical, but SMS have made all the right noises for me to get optimistic!

Hurrm... probably not a complete list but

1) the brake bias slider doesn't work, the only thing that does work are things that change brake power (master cylinder/brake upgrades) which can sort-of change the brake balance but not really in the way you might think. Disk heat tolerance and and brake pressure changes are the only thing the UI lets you change.

2) the drivetrain upgrade system is bugged, it will upgrade the clutch but not the rest of the drivetrain as it's meant to.

3) the suspension upgrade system is bugged, only springs will ever be upgraded when you upgrade suspension, not dampers as it's meant to.

4) the inability to set asymmetric setups means that several bugs to do with uneven car suspension settings (z06, maserati gts, r8lms, s2000, db9) were missed and it is impossible to properly balance these cars without modding.

5) springs are a good example of general UI annoyances, but in a few cases you will find that a "scale" is used for things, not an absolute figure. Gear ratios numbers for example are set purely by what the UI considers the midpoint of the available gears on that car, it's not the actual ratio used by the car. Spring upgrades change the "springrate" only, meaning that even though the same number is listed there, the number is up to 30% more actual spring for the same number than it was before being upgraded. "Wider tires" is actually the only tyre upgrade that does nothing to the tyre model itself. There are a few more like this.

boxox... Do you know whether these particular bugs also applied to the console side of the game, or were just sloppy coding during the port (if what we heard about Shift 1 being developed on the PS3 was true) to the PC?

I don't know what "developed on the ps3" means (not that I know of) but I'm pretty sure most of those bugs made it through to the console versions. Though it is hard to tell what happened past patch 1.02 there.

Was Shift 1 developed for PS3? I thought it was the other way around, Shift 1 was developed for Xbox/PC and then ported to PS3, but they had issues with that so they decided to reverse it for Shift 2.

I can't find anything to back that up though, so I may be pulling that entirely out of my arse.
