Yes, there is going to be one with a backlight screen. Nintendo didn't do it originally to keep costs down, and to keep power consumption low. (They are only allowing this one because it is apparently now possible to have a backlight with only 10% more power usage.)
Even better is the GBA docking station for the GC coming in the late winter/ early spring. You'll be able to play GBA games through the GC on a TV. (Without modifying it like the kit that is available now.)

Thats exactly why I didnt buy a GBA in the first place. I had a go with one at EB once and they had a huge light directly above it. The picture still looked mighty dark.

Well if they make it ill buy it. :)
Although I doubt id play it on the move or anything.
Another thing about the GBA is the games are so bloomin expensive.

good point......why do the games cost so much when you know the developement costs are way down from the 'big' systems and there are tons of GBAs out there too.

Licensing rights to Nintendo and the original developers. Plus apparently the GBA has slightly lower resolution than the SNES and all games have to be reworked a bit. (graphically)
Mostly the licensing though.

i saw a kit for install back light on the GBA (was on yahoo)

btw the price is 50 usd. and you have to open the system and solder a few things.

There have been kits out for a while that adds the backlight, but they're mighty $$... Something like $50 or $80? Then even more if you want other people to install it....

Yeah, there's a new GBA coming out that flips up like a cell phone and actually comes with lights. But it doesn't look like anything special, and it is going to cost around $100, so why bother?

Basically it has 3 advantages over the original GBA. One if Front Lighting, which will allow you to play under any conditions. (One of the biggest problems with a GBA is seeing the screen.)
The second advantage is that it has a built in rechargeable battery like a cell phone. (no more Energizer bunnies.)
The last is the flip design which was meant to protect the screen which apparently is the most common repair that Nintendo performs on a GBA. (Kids never take care of their toys...)
I've got a GBA for the connectivity option in several Gamecube games, but I can't see buying another for these things.

I really do like the look of it though and if I can get some nice RPG's for it, maybe doom it might be a nice distraction.
