Anyone play GT4 on the PS3?

I tried searching on this but didn't find the answer I was looking for. I was wondering if any of you have played GT4 on the PS2 and then on the PS3? I never owned a PS2 but I do have a PS3 and bought GT4 when I got my PS3 a little after launch. What I'm wondering is if GT4 looks the same when playing on the PS3 as it would on the PS2?

I know the PS3 had some backwards compability issue with some games before all the updates but for some reason, I remembered GT4 looking smoother when I played it on my friend's PS2 than it does when I'm playing it on my PS3 now. Even with the new latest firmware update, I still feel that it doesn't look as good for some reason. It also looks smoother from the videos that I've watched on this message board of GT4. Has anyone been able to do a side by side comparison of GT4 running on the PS2 and one running on the PS3?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I honestly did search and came up with nothing. Thanks for any information you guys can provide me with.

Regards,
Dan

I play GT4 on my PS3 almost exclusively now. I can't say I've noticed any differences, save for a little wobbling during the startup screens.

I notice a lot of tearing in the screen as well in the beginning and also a lot of pixelization during replays. I've been thinking about borrowing my friend's PS2 and his copy of GT4 to do a side by side comparison to see if my mind is just playing tricks on me or if it's a noticeable difference. I have a very keen eye for things like this and hot women.

My GT4 does that on the PS2 also. I thought that was just the playing it on a standard definition screen issue.

Quiet Storm, check what kind of screen your friend used and if it was showing at 1080i or not compared to yours. That could make a difference.

I think on the PS3 and through HDMI in 720p or 1080i on the European PS3's the textures stand out more, but nothing that improves the graphics.

Hmmmm...I never even thought about different displays. I'm using a 46" 1080P Samsung LCD When I played GT4 on my friend's PS2, it was on his 40" stand definition HUGE CRT box display. I guess that would make a huge difference in how the game looks since a 1080P display would show a lot more imperfections than a standard definition TV would. Man, you're smart!

There is no noticable improvements but the graphics are a bit smoother (FW update on the PS3 (this it was 1.80). other then that I can't watch the opening movie as it jumps like crazy.

I have a 1080i HD TV.
Playing GT4 on the PS3 looks smoother than when playing with PS2.
Bigger difference is when you play GT3 on the PS3 and then compare it to when GT3 is played on PS2.

PS3 has smoothing feather that it does to the PS2 games to make them look "smoother".
I've testing this out with many games and the smoothing feature is a big plus.
Very noticable when playing Winning Eleven 9 Soccer.

I've just conducted my first GT4+G25+PS3 test. Using an old Daewoo 21" CRT.

The starting movie jumps indeed, as do the Arcade mode videos running when you're choosing the course type. These are nothing alarming as they don't affect the actual gameplay.

A bit more alarming was the fact that during the driving the upper left corner of the screen has a tendency to have dark flashes about the size of a matchbox. Very brief flashes, every now and then. Not all the time. It may be the old PS2 cables I used, I'll pull out the brand new PS3 ones later and try with them. Also the old replays don't work properly anymore.

On the positive side, there was not a single problem with the wheel. And the quality of the picture just made me  as the colours and contrast beat the PS2 with a comfortable margin. It's almost like GT4HD without any software changes, I didn't even have the smoothing feature on!

If someone knows a certain solution to the flashing, please tell me. 👍

Okay, so I tried GT4 on PS3 today but i'm having some problems. I have a 46" Sony Bravia LCD with up to 1080p and it's hooked up to a 80 GB PS3 through an HDMI cable.

I went to display options within GT4 and switched to 1080i. The menu screens worked fine but as soon as I got to the pre-race menu the screen went all wacky with random rainbow colors and pixelization all over the place. What the hell is going on?? I can run it in 480p but at that resolution it looks like crap. Also I don't have an option to use 720p, the only options available are 480p and 1080i.

I'm curious why I'm experiencing these problems. Whatever, GT5 prologue demo comes out tomorrow and once I have that I won't give crap if GT4 doesn't play in 1080i.

Also running GT4 now on my PS3 at 1080i. I'm using a Digital Light Projector for the display device, and with a screen that large any defects pop out at you immediately.

GT4 definitely looks worse out of the PS3 no matter what mode I choose. Obviously 1080i is still the best mode, but the quality is considerably degraded compared to the 1080i mode out of my PS2. There are problems with random pixel noise and also with poor gradient transitions (which cause blockiness in the image). Until Sony issues a fix for this I'll probably keep using the PS2 for GT4.

Until Sony issues a fix for this
I think that won't happen.

Yahoo.com
A new low-end model with a 40-gigabyte drive will go on sale Nov. 2 for $399.
Unlike the other PlayStation 3 models, the new one won't be able to play games made for the PlayStation 2. In a statement, Sony said this was due to a more extensive lineup of games of the PlayStation 3.

Are they still going to make a higher-end PS3 that also does have backwards compatibility? I really don't want to have two consoles in my living room.

What's your point with that Yahoo-quote? Even if these new and cheap and crappier 40GB low-end models won't have the PS2 compatibility, I bet I'm not the only one playing GT4 on PS3, thus there's a possibility Sony will fix these issues in a later firmware.

When Sony announced the 40gb model they also said the BC would be supported for models with BC in future updates.

Duke, I have yet to hear anyone mention dropping the 80gb, but I can't say for sure.

Thanks, FK. I'm not planning to buy a PS3 until next year, but when I do, I have a bunch of PS2 (and even PS1) games that I'll want to be able to play.

I understand your situation as I play GT4 more than any of my PS3 games right now and my deal with my wife was that when I got the PS3 the PS2 has to exit the premises.

So, BC was definitely an important issue for me and I have kept a watch on the situation because if I ever need a new PS3 I will be in trouble without BC.

My PS2 broke down just when I started playing GT4 again. Since PS3 had BC, I didn't see any reason to buy yet another PS2 just to move on to PS3 in near future anyway. So BC was and still is the thing for me. I got Motorstorm and FOM with my PS3 starter pack, but those games just aren't my cup of tea. At the moment my PS3 is only for GT4, Folding@Home and to warm up my house.

you won't be able to play GT4 on these PS3's (the 40 gb's), so PD isn't going to make updates to improve GT4 on the PS3. That's my point with the Yahoo quote.

:)

Any proof or just your assumption? Anyhow, I think it's Sony's responsibility to make the updates. They're the one who advertise the BC.
Just an assumption.

Do mean that Sony is giving PD the order to make the updates? Because PD is the developper of the GT series, not Sony.

As far as I know they still plan to support the BC in the 20gb, 60gb, and 80gb models. They have not said otherwise.

gotta question: Does your game freeze at all when your playing on the ps3? I have 2 copies of gt4, an original release & a brand new greatest hits.

They both freeze after a race or two. Particularly in long races. Both my discs are scratchless & I don't leave it on for more than an hour or 2 at the most. I've been trying to get thru the FGT now for upwards of 3 months. I just can't save after the race.

i've been trying to beat the Super Speedway enduro for awhile now too. It freezes right after the prizecar screen. It just did it the day before yesterday after an 8 hour b-spec stint at the 'Ring. Anything you guys have encountered?

Mine has only doen it while loading into a race once, while the little clock icon is spinning. From what I hear that isn't an overly uncommon thing to happen.

Never after a race though.

It freezes on the B&W 'gt' screen with the clock. It's yet to do it on the red & blue 'badge' screen. It also happen right after you click the 'ok' button on the prize car page. The screen fades to black with just the little arrow visible, and stays that way. Right after you win the car, right before it autosaves.

Anyone know if the ps3 updates take care of this type of thing?

Well PD made a complete product (yes, it has it's flaws) for PS2 which has worked fine. I think Sony has to make those updates so PS3 would emulate PS2 as well as possible.

I never had a PS2 so I am new to GT4. Love it so much on my 60gig PS3 that I went out and bought GT3. Now seriously thinking of getting GT2 and trying to maybe even get GT to see if it works on mine.
Yes the problem of the box in the top left hand corner is also on mine, but it doesn't stop any enjoyment.

My GT4 does that on the PS2 also. I thought that was just the playing it on a standard definition screen issue.
Actually, I have always suspected it to be caused by the PlayStation2 's output signal and not the television. My suspicion is that it happens only with interlace mode.

It happens on my Dell 2407WFP-HC LCD and on my Pioneer plasma television set. I just don't have the cables to test my theory with progressive scan mode.
