Anyway to convert replay file?

Hi guys.

GT5 has an option to export the replay file to a Save Data Utility (PS3TM) file, and not an MP4. Is there anyway to convert these files into one .MP4 file so I can watch the replay on my computer? It is copyable, I transferred it to a USB. The file looks like this:

Thanks.

The replays are not stored as videos, so there is no way to convert them. The only way would be for the game to be patched to have some kind of video export function. Which is certainly possible I guess, given that this game looks set to be highly extended through frequent patches.

Well yes I was hoping it would be a feature to be patched in but I thought it might have been a bit hard to do but we can hope!

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. However I'm curious as well on how this works for both GT5 and GT4. Any help appreciated!

EDIT: Nevermind. Answers appeared as I was typing. I hate forums on iPhone.

I think you can upload replays to youtube straight from the game ? Or did they not put this feature in ?

There is no way to convert as those are only like notes to PS3 how to run simulation(replay) and not video that can be converted.

.

It's not there ATM. It was on a wishlist from quite a while back. But clearly it wasn't quite possible yet.

Maybe in a later patch, especially if you need to be online to use the feature, they may have held back on it until the servers are stable and traffic dies down.

I'd rather the game gave us the option to export the file to XMB. In games like Pain and Just Cause 2, the YouTube upload is significantly lower quality than if you export, copy to PC then upload manually. Obviously it's to reduce the time it takes to upload, but I'd rather have the quality.

This.

This was my original hope in the first place, but to no luck.
To be honest, I wish we could upload things directly to USB instead of the whole export to XMB feature.

To give some insight into this, and why I don't think its likely PD will ever allow a full HD quality replay vid, or even uses a video file for replays. A vid of the proper quality to look like its in game would be HUGE. Think of it this way, when you capture a video from a HD camcorder, you can capture in a number of formats and qualities. For GT5, the quality level would probably be up around the highest resolution DVD quality format you can pick. This amounts to a file that can exceed probably 5gb for a 10 min vid. Get a few vids on your PS3, and space quickly disappears.

So, with that in mind, if PD used a video file as the replay, frame rates would suck as the processor tries to capture the video at the same time as racing, along with the fact that it would have to transfer that info directly to the hdd, which compared to ram, is a VERY slow process. The use of data files instead of video files means a simple procedure is written for the full replay, probably amounting to no more than 1mb or so for the whole file.

So, I don't think we will see any kind of video capture and export actually built into the game (in the real time fashion), or PS3 system entirely. It just takes far too much processing power to implement such a system.

On a side note, it may be possible for PD to implement a converter into GT5 that would make a lower quality video file from the replay files. But again, it could potentially be a slow process and frustrate people more than it should.

dont kid yourself.

if pd says i dont need an option, then hell, i dont need it

they just didnt bother doing it

True a 1080p/60 low compression video would be huge but a perfectly reasonable mid ground is an h.264 encoded 480p/30 video.

I mean first off the replays are only rendered at 30fps anyway so there goes the need for 60fps and if the purpose is to upload to youtube or share ultimately 480p is plenty good enough.

I would think this would need to be a step done seperately (not automatically during a race) but on hardware like the PS3 I would think it doable in quite a reaosnable amount of time if the game simply had a section dedicated to it so you waited for it to finish like you do for a photo travel photo to "Expose".

To offer better insight to this, a 'replay" is just that, a replay of the simulator session and as such needs to inlcude all datat to allow switching views and cars etc.

What people are asking for is an "export to video" from the replay option - and this is not an unreasonable request. As with all "export to video" options in games (and many games have them) they say "You need to be sure you have the free space and time before you click GO".

Thsi way replay data is small (2mb to 20mb per replay) you get to swtich views and cars AND you get to export your favourite replay scene to AVI ;)

From what I've read the intention is that ultimately we'll be able to render movie files from the replay data (as with Forza 3).

It can't come soon enough!

i dont think itll ever happen. if pd havent done it before release why would they go to the effort after the game is released.

i would have loved to see it happen but i think gt5 is a case of cut and run. with the exception of the online part of the game which they had to fix

They said this was going to be a feature, then on some twitter account he says they dropped it because either it was time consuming to make videos or files to bin. Don't recall which one but from the way he explains it it's really already there.

From the news page about Yamauchi's recent tweets:

"•The YouTube replay upload feature had to be pulled from the final version of the game because it took a very long time to render and it consumed too much memory. Yamauchi is still considering it, however."

Sorry to bring up an old thread for my first post, but what exactly can we do with the video file that we export to the PS3? I know it's not a video file, but what's the point of it? Can we transfer it to our computer, email it to a friend, and then that friend can watch it on their PS3 providing they have GT5? Thanks for your help.

I recently decided to make a video and ended up doing it with my phone camera and it looks like crap, so I did some investigating and have some info for you.

You can save and export the replay data, but the data only contains basically just the car and your interactions with the scenery like skid marks on the road, walls etc. The track and environment is not part of the data and therefore you can't the saved data and use it anywhere but on another PS3 with GT5 installed.

There are a couple of ways to get the replay onto your pc for editing, posting to youtube etc. One way is to PVR/DVR the image with something similar to this Bell Canada PVR

In Canada a new PVR is about $200 and records in 1080p HD. From the PVR/DVR which captures the full image, you can download to your PC and edit from there. However, you only capture the replay as it is displayed, meaning whatever view you play is what's captured, you can't change views or anything else once it gets to the PVR. So you basically select the views and parts of the replay you want, play them back, and record them as is.

Another way is through a capture card in your PC or an external, stand alone capture device. Roxio makes inexpensive capture devices designed to be used with XBox and PS3 and you will find them on Roxio's Website. They have them in HD and 480P I believe. In Canada they are $99 and $59 respectively, quite a bit cheaper than the American prices I found online. There are others you have to do some searching.

There are dozens of different PC Capture Cards, some of which will work with the PS3 and some may not, you'll have to research it. 480P will be cheapest, HD more money. One advantage they may possess is they are more universal, and can often be used with camcorders, cameras, tv signals etc. For these check retailers or go directly to companies like AverMedia, Elgato and Hauppauge who all make these types of devices, some designed specifically with games in mind. Expect to pay well over $100 for a good HD device, well under $100 for 480p.

I bought the Roxio HD device a couple of days ago but haven't had the time to do anything with it. You can check out the crap quality of my inaugural DeadNutsEven Racing video below. Notice the two photos at the front which are good quality downloads from the net, and the rest is GT5 footage from my phone, which is 720p, but a lot gets lost in the translation. And yes, the Three Stooges are in my video!!!

When I get a replacement done, I'll also post it here (assuming I remember) so you can see the difference, if any...lol.
