Apparently, I was driving the wrong way all this time...

All of my GT "career," (if you can call it that, hey, you DO race for cash, even if it IS virtual!) I've ALWAYS used the X, [ ], and the left analog stick, and I just had to wonder...it it the way I was driving, or do I just suck at the games?

Well a few weeks ago, I switched tio the "two Analog" method, and all of a sudden, I am driving a HELL of a lot better than I used to. I've found that you have a hell of a lot more control that way. What about you guys? Have you experienced a sudden rise in your driving ability like I have?

I mean geez, we're talking night and day here.

Theonly difference for me, is that I use the L1 button for the brake.
It has enough travel that you can brake lightly.
It also allows you to add some throttle for trail braking.

I still use the buttons and the D-pad.. I find it much easier to gauge how hard I'm pressing something rather than how far I've moved a little stick :)

Use whatever works for you..

I use L analog stick and X. I use X because it allows me to tap the brake without letting off accelleration...helps on many corners for me.

If I used the R analog stick, I would be letting off the gas then braking, then going bad to accelerating.

My story goes:

back in my GT1 days (almost 4 years ago :scared:) I was driving a Camaro around Autumn Ring. I was REALLY getting frustrated. I would push the X button in my Silvia and it accelerated out of corners fine....but in my Camaro, every time I left a corner I'd literally be prone to a donut or at least a swerve as the rear tires lost grip.

I mean, I was real frustrated. :banghead: About ready to give up. And then I thought (like you) hmm....I wonder what happens if I go in the OPTIONS menu...

And as you say it was like night and day...the control I suddenly had was great. 👍 Nowadays (in GT4) I mostly use analog sticks, but occasionally switch to the D-pad for finer steering motions (like as I'm rolling down a long straight). And I also began using X and [] again in some endurance races, just for the variety (you use different muscles in your hand to press buttons, so I like to switch so my hand don't get fatigued.)

As Rotary Junkie says...you'll suck if you go from DS2 to wheel. That's what happened to me, too.

depends of the wheel. if it's logitech DFP/G25, it might be difficult at first, but to be honest, using a wheel helps your driving a lot, since you won't be going from lock to lock in nanoseconds.

I couldn't seem to get used to using the right analog stick to accelerate and brake, probably because I've been using the 'x' 'square' combination for years now in all driving games.

My driving got far smoother and my lap times got whole seconds faster when I swapped from DS2 to a wheel. It took a little getting used to but it felt more enjoyable even when at first I was going slower. A wheel just makes the game feel a bit more real for me. It didn't take me long at all to start beating my DS2 times with the wheel. A couple of days tops, but that's probably because I was rubbish with the DS2.

It's all in personal taste, though I agree with you. I can't imagine driving with the buttons. Then again, I've gotten my butt kicked by people driving with the D-pad for steering, too.

I use X and [] and the left analog stick for racing, but both analog sticks for pottering round. I like the way when using X and [] you can blip the throttel on downshifts while still on the brake.

I'm saying nothing... :D

Mine happened when i used to overlap my thumb with my index finger to brake. I too used X for acceleration and square for brakes. Though it placed wear on my digits, I was driving well enough to win most of the races I entered. Then my older brother showed me how to use the accelerator and the brake with my thumb only, and I did not give much thought to it until I injured my hand driving in the Grand Valley 300km Endurance Race. I found my brother's style to be more effective, and suddenly things opened up. I could race faster and longer on a Dual Shock 2 controller, making me virtually invincible on the track. THEN they introduced B-Spec...

i use a DS2 and i can control the X and Sq carefully... it's so easy now... but i'd like to try out a wheel one day, its just too back feedback dies off

There is no wrong way to drive. I use X Square and the D-Pad. It's just whatever suites you the best.

--words of wisdom--

there is no "right" way. so true.

I was about to say exactly the same thing and I guess there's a few of us that agree. I still use X, [] and the left analogue stick and I don't have problems with it (even considering modulation with the buttons).. though I can't help but wonder what it would be like with a wheel...? 💡

Yes, those are great words:tup:
Didn't try other ways, and i'm not intending to either.
Wanting to drive extremely good just gets the fun out of your game. I mean seriously, people have lives.

True, there is no right way to drive when it comes to what you choose to use. But for racing simulation, I feel the wheel, with force feedback at max gives me the sensation of racing. True.

ERacer, that's got to be one of the best avatars I've ever seen!

On topic content... ummmm, ahhhh, uhhh, well, ummm.... yeah I've thought of something. We've spoken about going from a very sensitive control (the buttons) to something less sensitive (the analog sticks or a wheel). Has anyone ever tried going the other way around? I accidentally forced myself to drive the FGT car around Nurb, in a race, using the DS2 a while ago. My preferred control at the time was a G25 wheel, which was not plugged in. I was all over the place! I had all aids turned off, and gears on manual. Boy was that challenging...

There's nothing worse than to be driving using a G25, only to be beaten by a button-bashing, cross-legged sitting, Famine. It's so annoying. :grumpy:

I was testing car X (a fast, tricky one) one day and decided to give up the G25 for a while, and have a DS2 run. After fighting my way around the track with the G25, correcting every small movement of the car to keep it going straight, the DS2 felt literally like cheating.

All the finesse needed was gone, throwing the analog stick to one side somewhere near the turn-in point made the car just to glue itself to the apex, shooting through the corner without any effort and still very much faster on a perfect line.

I might also say much of the skill needed was gone, it's just too easy. Correcting snap oversteer when accelerating ouf of a corner can be quite a show with the G25 as the car wants to go right, left, then straighten out momentarily before the inertia tears it to the right again... with the DS2 there is no need to do anything, just floor it. The car will correct itself. Boring with a capital B.

I finally broke down and bought a wheel a few months ago. I was never really able to do the whole thumbstick thing.
