A fake Apple advert claiming the new iOS 7 software makes iPhones and iPads waterproof has apparently fooled some users into destroying their devices.

The fake advert circulating on social media sites claims that updating devices with the operating system installs a "smart switch" that cuts off the phone's power supply when water is detected, Sky News reported.

This, it claims, "prevents any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry".

The ad has the look and feel of an authentic Apple advertisement, with the same minimalist font and style and plain white background.

It seems some users have been fooled into dunking their Apple gadgets into water to test out the promised feature, only to render their devices useless.

One user wrote on Twitter: "Whoever said iOS 7 was waterproof **** you."

Another wrote: "OK whoever said iOS 7 is waterproof GO **** YOURSELF."

The prank is believed to have originally started on the controversial forum 4Chan.

The iOS 7 software was released last week, and has come under fire for slowing devices down and causing users to delete everything from their iPads and iPhones.

Apple is yet to comment.

Apple does need to answer to the GS4 Active and SONY Experia phone that has its circuitry coated to make it water proof. As an Apple family, I'm getting sick and damned tired of being an iTunes slave and Apples not so progressive attitude, despite being a very liberal company.

I guess these people don't know much about the differences between software and hardware. People really think a phone update will change the way water effects circuitry?

Laughing my butt of at this. The whole thing did come from 4chan, I believe. The guys on there did something else a while back, something about microwaving your iDevice or whatever. This is just round two, really. And I can't help it, but they definitely did pick the right demographic for this. That's not to say that iPhone users are generally stupid, but if there's one company, one phone that attracts people who're gullible enough to fall for this, it's got to be Apple and the iPhone.

/edit:
So, I just posted the original fake advert on Facebook.

I'll add this as well, sooner or later:

Bwahaha!

The issue isn't that iPhone owners are stupid, but that stupid people that own iPhones are stupid.

Agreed. To be honest, 95% of my posts come from my iPhone 4. Also, I've never heard of a phone being waterproof. The only time a phone CAN/MAY be waterproof is when you buy a 100+ dollars for a case that may or may not protect the iPhone. For the iOS 7 being waterproof is completely invalid and is also an opinion.

Yes, also 95% of my posts come from my iPhone... But TBH I know many people who think they are better humans just because they have an Apple device (I became an Apple hater)... but that is off topic

ive got an Iphone and i wouldnt change it for anyother phone as they work good, my phones been in baths, ponds & puddles and it still works fine, im not saying its waterproof but there must be some truth in them as i thought mine would have died by now but 2yrs after being in the bath for a min and mines still working fine.

That kinda relates to it being waterproof, just my opinion.

Seems no matter how crazy something is there will always be someone somewhere who will believe it.

Even hear of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active?
When I saw waterproof IPhone thing I thought that Apple was trying to copy Samsung.

That's a video edit on an actual commercial video of a product(NeverWet) that is supposed to bead water and slide off effortlessly without making actual contact on the device.

I had mentioned the Active earlier and the waterproof SONY phone. I can send my iPhone out to be taken apart and the delicate electronics coated with whatever it is they use to waterproof ANY mobile device.

Sorry, Samsung is not an innovator, they simply make consumer electronics. When they come up with their own operating system, we can talk innovation. The 5s has a 64 bit processor, guess who will "follow"... Yes, I do like Samsung's flat panel displays. But, their AV receivers and speakers are absolute JUNK!!!

Aftermarket work doesn't mean anything, though. In this day & age, what becomes impressive is what the manufacturers offer to the consumer for a certain price. So far, Samsung & Sony seem to be the only ones offering waterproof phones you can buy straight from a carrier or them instead of having to go to some 3rd Party company.

Apple made the ipad mini after they saw how popular samsungs 7" tablets were.

Apple made colored plastic phones to be "Cheaper", samsung had colored plastic phones.

Samsung came up with the idea of a smaller tablet for better portability and ease of use.

Apple use an ARM CPU for their devices.

The ARM v8 was the first 64bit ARM CPU, Apple just made the first Native O/S to run on it.

And samsung have made their own O/S thank you and they done it before iOS 1.0.

Well, I dropped my old Nokia 7110 in a pub toilet, vomited on it, flushed the toilet, the phone stayed in the bowl, I accidentally left it in there for one hour. Retrieved it later on, allowed it to dry, charged it up.. it worked.

I didn't keep it though.

I don't think my iPhone5 would put up with that...
