Are you using the clutch?

Where applicable, are you guys beating these events with stick and cluctch or just sequential shifting?

On many of the events so far I can barely get gold with sequential let alone try to clutch and shift my way through it... just wondering.

I use the paddles only on cars that use paddles, everything else I use the clutch and shifter. Practice with the shifter it will come naturally (eventually). The one thing I like about the shifter is I know what gear I am in at all times, with the paddles it is easy to lose track when your upshifting/downshifting particularly with a 6 speed box. Practice with the clutch and shifter on less powerful cars until you get the hang of it since the shifts are farther in between than on a more powerful car.

Yeah I've stuck to what the car has in real life, just gotta practice practice.

I actually think the Nascar is a really good car to practice with on a road course, since you only have 4 gears to worry about and it handles quite well with max downforce, you can quicken up your shifts quite a bit after a few good runs.

Sequential or paddle....I really can't get a grip with how GT5 treats the clutch use. I have a ton of problem from 4-3 downshift.

Practice Practice Practice, sometimes my 5 to 4 ends up 5 to 2...Ouch :ouch:

I just find neutral. Even in a real car its not that demanding on your timing. The issue is this is entirely timing based. You might have a less smooth shift if your timing is off, but you will still find gear. Where as this if your timing is off you just get N. That is not exactly right....

I thought it was just me being only a so-so stick driver. But I get my much more experienced friend to drive and he does the exact same thing...

I am pretty smooth with the shifter and indeed it's good to have especially in cars that don't have a gear display when you run HUD off, but my problem with shifting is that no matter how good I get, you still have to drop the throttle while shifting and it ultimately takes it toll on your performance... I can loose as much as a second or two per lap on some longer courses especially if gear shifts come at awkward times.

I try to make up for it by dropping 2 or more gears at a time while engine braking but even so, I find there is no way to be as fast as with paddle shifters.

I have only found you have to let off the throttle from 1st to 2nd, this carried over from GT5P. All other gears are fine, your issue could be in your timing of letting out the clutch and shifting? You are right in that paddle shifting is definetely faster, but for the simulation factor is it morally right to use the paddles in a car that doesn't have them? I know this opens another argument especially when you may be playing someone online that is using a wheel without a clutch and shifter. It is personal preference but using the clutch and shifter adds that challenge factor to the equation. It is truly something if you beat someone online using the cluth and shifter who is using the paddles!

Huh... I had just assumed you had to let off the accelerator for all gears, i will try flat shifting some of the higher gears... would make a huge difference.

It does make a huge difference, once you get over the 1st to 2nd snag you will be happy. I was frustrated like you when I started GT5 because I really hadn't played GT5P in 8mos and was really rusty. I still have a few miss shift's but hey it's all part of the game and my bad shift not any part of the games.

The thing that kills me about misshifts is that there is nothing to let you know right away something was wrong... I mean the stick has no FFB in it but a loud grinding noise would be nice to let me know I am still in neutral rather than the next gear I wanted to be in...

Really agree with this, especially when you're playing with the hud off, sometimes it will take me several seconds to realise I'm not going anywhere.

I think it's Live For Speed, but some pc sim anyways, when you screw up the shift it just stays in neutral for 2 seconds and then puts you into gear, you don't have to do the shift all over again. Something like that would be nice.

I'm usin clutch, and I really enjoy it, but having trouble keeping up in the seasonal events. I'm not overtuning the cars, as I want the challenge in winning them. I know it takes practice, and i have only had the Fanatec Carrera for a month, but really having problem downshifting and braking while steering... :-/

My clutch setup should be here Tom! I've just been using the DFGT ...I'm really interested how I'll adjust... The paddles are so fast and I'm an engine breaking machine...I also drive a 6spd mini I'm hoping that will help some...

Same for me. Before driving a car I check what kind of transmission / gearbox it has if I'm not sure.

So yes, I have been using the clutch where applicable. I actually find that I'm faster with it since you get extra breaking power (engine breaking). Did anyone else notice this?
