If you like the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato but are, well, a little claustrophobic, then your prayers have been answered. Just in time for Pebble Beach, Zagato has found its ginormous tin opener and cranked the roof right open.

Of course, as the product of a fine British sports car maker and an exquisite Italian coachbuilder, the process will have been significantly more delicate than that. From its looks alone, the resulting Vanquish Zagato Volante did not want for time or love in its creation.

Like the hard-top version, it uses a 592bhp 6.0-litre V12 engine, firmly from Aston’s old-school rather than its renaissance, led by the new DB11. It’s good for a 3.7-second 0-62mph time, while its top speed should be a whisker shy of 200mph.

Styling wise, it’s exceedingly close to the coupe version: the red paint and gold detailing remains (right down to the wheels, which you’ll love or hate), while the bonnet vent and Polo mint-like running lights remain, too.

Thanks to its sill and rear splitter treatment, its body appears to rise from a carbon base, which is quite cool. And there are plenty of lavish little details: note the wee Zs carved out around the rear lights.

....Maybe it's the inner geezer going through MLC in me, but I prefer this over the coupe. Wind-in-hair, bugs-in-teeth is the best, after all.
