Yes, you read the title right. Prayers go out to all the families. :(

Link.
The Telegraph
At least 232 people died on Sunday when a fire tore through a nightclub packed with university students in the southern Brazilian city of Santa Maria, police said.

The death toll from the inferno stood initially at 70 but rapidly increased as firefighters searched the charred remains of the "Kiss" club, believed to have been packed with 300-400 revelers at the time of the blaze.

MIlitary police commander Rois Tavares confirmed the new death toll, down from an earlier figure of 245 given by police. He said the dead included 120 men and 112 women, most of whom had died in asphyxiation.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff cut short a visit to Chile, where she was attending a European and Latin American summit, to head to Santa Maria and oversee the response to the tragedy, a Brazilian official said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, but media reports said the fire broke out after 2:00 am (0400 GMT) when the nightclub was hosting a university party featuring a rock band using pyrotechnics.

I heard on the news it was because a band member trough a flare into the roof. :boggled:

Also, I believe it was 245 deaths. :(

Reminds me of the "Great White" incident, think they excpected the death toll to rise from 245 also. Pyrotechnics should be banned from indoor use, it's just a dumb thing to do.

I agree, unfortunally they still would be around trough illegal methods.

That was my immediate thought as well. Prayers go out to the families, esp. with such young lives gone. :(

Where's the building safety system ? Sprinklers, fire extinguishers, emergency exits ? How can so many people died trapped inside ? Sad new indeed.

Pyrotechnics on a closed place which hasn't even a single well signaled emergency exit or a simple fire alarm with functional sprinklers. I wonder if the place had proper licensing from the prefecture, since even a small bar needs approval from the firefighters to open it's doors. Probably not.

Condolences to the families and friends.

was traveling, I received this news of 233 people killed by a fire in the disco and 120 injured, and one fatality people that God enlighten these young people who sustain these families from this pain, my condolences families.

RIP to all that were killed, the incident sounded horrific from what I heard on the news.

I do however think to a certain extent with the safety of the nightclub it would only be a matter of time until something happened. If peopled needed to get out in a hurry and they can't find an exit then that is just a recipe for a disaster.

There wasn't just one guard, there were lots, which is worse. Such a senseless thing to do to hold them back. I don't even know that, had they not tried holding people back if many more would've been able to get out anyway. When a human wall builds up at an exit bottleneck it just becomes too much so quickly.

I was sickened by the original number of 90 deaths, now it's just beyond.
Most of them were young university students celebrating the end of Summer and the beginning of school :(

it truly is an unfortunate tragic accident, fortunately accident's can be forgiven, at least it wasn't a suicide bombing, thoughts go to their families,

This reminds me, and I presume the news reached Brazil at the time, of the tragedy of Cromañón nine years ago in Argentina. Even the cause of the fire seems to be basically the same, except what happened in Cromañón was that a person in the crowd lighted a flare instead of one of the members of the band (who even insisted nobody did anything like that during the show). 194 people died, and now this happens.

Thoughs and prayers go to the families of the deceased and injured.

I doubt the legitimacy of the doormen claim. They'd be keeping an eye on things and would be the first ones to notice a large fire. They'd either get out of there pronto or pull a fire alarm/alert the patrons. What's worse for the club, hundreds dead and millions in potential lawsuits or a few thousand in drinks?

This. It could be another case of "pull doors only".
