Following the "Palace Revolt" also known as the "Great Walkout" at Ferrari in November 1961, most of the top talent (including Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarini) left Ferrari and formed ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport). They launched the ATS 2500GT in 1963 and a Formula One car which sadly is regarded as one of the worst ever made.

The road car, however, which featured a body by Franco Scaglione was magnificent and very advanced for 1963, featuring a mid-mounted 2.5 litre V8 which produced 245bhp and was later used by Alfa Romeo in the Tipo 33, Montreal and other cars. Some cars had less chrome and slatted louvres over the rear window.

Magnificent Carlo Chiti flat plane crank V8 later developed by him at Autodelta and used in the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 and Montreal.

Interior showing signs of wear. This car was one of only 12 made - the disastrous performance of the Formula One car didn't help sales or establish the cars racing pedigree in the way that had been hoped.

I would love to get behind that steering wheel in GT6 or GT7.

Nice find Sick.

Can I have the one with bonnet ducts, slated rear window and no bumpers please. Oh and possibly a leather steering wheel.

Looks great, I support it. I know the 33 Stradale utilized a dry-sump system. Did this car too?

I love the engine of these cars, and making them both beautiful just makes it even better. This all aluminum V8 deserves more likes! A V8 revving to 9,000 RPM was unheard of at the time.

Left a like here, old sport!

Hi Aero - having done more research I have found that only eight cars were built. The red car was the last car made and was one of only two cars to feature a 3.0 litre engine. When it was advertised for sale by RM Auctions in 2009 it was listed as an ATS 2500 GT not a GTS.

They had listed it wrong then... IT's a GTS not a GT... GTS had without bumpers and without the single glaswindow over the Engine.

Hi Aero - I can't find any details relating to a GTS model. 12 chassis were built and 8 cars were completed. When one of the original investors, Count Volpi, left the project he took the red car pictured and badged it as a Serenissima, he also took the four chassis. Volpi was the founder of Scuderia Serenissima which previously raced Ferraris and he intended to develop the car into a Serenissima using 3 litre versions of the V8 engine - presumably for racing. This however didn't happen.

There are full details of the red car available from the following link. It sold for £308,000 in 2009.

12 chassis were made, but only 8 cars were completed and they may have varied widely in specification - we know that 2 had 3 litre engines including the red one. The dark car has a fully covered engine - it is not shown in the photos, but it had an insulated cover over the engine to reduce noise and presumably make it a genuine grand touring car. In the first post of the thread I referred to a GTS model, but later edited that out as I could not find supporting evidence - so I may have added to the confusion.

It appears that we have two versions - the GT show car with 2.5 litre engine which is a road car and the red version, badged on the front as a Serenissima made for Count Volpi with a 3 litre engine which looks more suited to racing although it has a fully trimmed interior of black leather and wilton carpets.

Either model of the car would be nice to have in the game. The 2.5 litre would be a good competitor for the Ferrari Dino and Lancia Stratos. It would also be nice to get the Lamborghini Uracco to go with these great mid sized supercars.

If this helps as well..

For 1964 the Formula 1 program was axed and instead Chiti focused on the competition oriented 2500 GTS (for Superleggera). Fitted with an aluminum body and the 250 bhp version of the V8, two were entered in the Targa Florio. Both retired with ignition problems.

GT or GTS - It would make a great addition to the Gran Turismo car collection.
