The R8’s little brother has been let out to play! These exclusive pictures show the fastest TT ever – and it’s the first version of Audi’s compact coupé to wear the historic RS badge.

The TT RS prototype, spied here without any camouflage, is virtually production ready, and earmarked to go on sale at the end of the year.

And not only will the new flagship dethrone the TT S as the fastest model available, it’s set to look the part, too. The RS will be instantly identifiable over lesser models thanks to a lower ride height, R8-style bodykit, chrome wing mirrors and enlarged oval exhaust pipes.

The wheelarches have also been widened to make room for 19-inch alloys. An arched rear spoiler and the addition of RS badges will complete the look.

In typical RS fashion, the TT will be no slouch, thanks to Audi’s first in-line five-cylinder petrol engine for more than 10 years. This layout can trace its roots back to the Quattro of the Eighties, but was last used in the 227bhp S6 of 1995.

The 2.5-litre twin-turbo unit in the TT RS will deliver 350bhp – 80bhp more than the TT S – and is mated to a six-speed manual. A seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox will be offered as an option.

Sequential turbochargers ensure that power delivery is linear throughout the rev range. A smaller turbo does the work at lower revs, before the larger blower takes over and provides thrust all the way to the red line.

Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system will be used. Combine this with the engine’s torque and a 160kg kerbweight advantage over the R8, and the TT RS shouldn’t be far behind the supercar in a straight line. Expect a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph.

Inside, the coupé gets a pair of sculpted racing seats, a trademark flat-bottomed steering wheel and drilled aluminium pedals. Other features include Magnetic Ride adaptive dampers and the latest version of Audi’s MMI cabin control system with a touchscreen interface.

When the TT RS goes on sale in the UK at the end of the year it will cost around £40,000 – £7,000 more than the TT S.

Twinturbo I5? Do want.

Audi I5 revival? Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. Can't wait to hear the exhaust note!

No surprise there, I have been saying for months if not a year now that the TT-RS would have a 2.5 5cylinder engine. Some people thought I was making it up, but my sources came through yet again.

If this is only going to be 40k, I might buy a year and a half old example.

I'll buy one over an R8. Look at the price/performance differential: you don't lose a whole lot for the drop in price.

Note to Audi: Double-you Arr Cee. Next logical step for the TT.

WRC is only 2.0L I4 engines as far as I know.

I'm not saying they have to use that engine...they just need to get back into rallying again, now that they're switching to a less expensive GT program with the R8.

Audi are still gonna be competeing in top flight lemans with a new petrol race car.

Thank the Lord. I'm all for diesels but I don't like their presence in top-flight motor racing (unless it's truck racing...).

what is that in US? 60k? i'll buy a 5 year old example...

Well on current exchange rate it's roughly $70,600 but you can bet when it does hit the States it'll only be about $55,000 probably. If not less.

Thats the target I assume? I'll pick the Porsche in this situation... Same $50K price range to boot.

Is that the target? The TT isn't a thoroughbred sportscar, it's a well-refined "Golf with a frock." I would think Audi would have just made a smaller sibling for the R8 if they really wanted to take on the Cayman S (and haven't there been rumors of that sort of project?). The TT-RS is more like the 135i, a muscled-up compact coupe, though it costs £10000 more, making me wonder what Audi has in mind with that pricing. We'll have to see what price it shows up with when it crosses the Atlantic.

TT-RS is not exactly aimed at Cayman specifically. Audi did want to make a R4 to compete with cayman but porsche vetoed that program.

TT-RS is a 4 seater coupe, competition being scirroco, brera s and the 135i coupe. People will however cross shop with the cayman and Z4M inevitably.

yup, sounds good

VW has a way of making some good sounding small engines. Not a nice V8 burble, but still great sounding. The 2.0T also gives a great low note at low RPMs, and I'm sure this will be no exception.

SLK-55? This'll be significantly cheaper, but the two have similar HP ratings. Maybe some variety of Z is also in their sights? I'm guessing this car is pretty well clear of the Z4-M or whatever it's called.

The TT is about as much a 4 seater as a 911 is....

Not sure what you mean by pretty well clear, but if the article is correct in with it's (UK) pricing, it will be roughly the same price as the Z4 M Coupe, which in Europe makes 343 DIN hp.

Which, btw, is no longer in production as of last week.

Yes indeed the Z4 has taken it's last swing, and will be replaced by the brand new Z2

I'd expect the Cayman will end up being a rival to the TT-RS even though, as Forza mentioned, the TT's natural rivals are the 1-series coupe, the Scirocco and the Brera. Personally, like YSSMAN, I think I'd go for the Porsche, though it'd be a close call. Realistically I wouldn't be able to afford either, but I'd love to drive both.

👍 for the vid of the TT at the 'Ring, does indeed sound good.

For those who thought that VR5 engined test mule sounded great, just wait till you hear the inline 5 cylinder engine, much much better still!

This car will be like the successor to the great Audi S2! which was the successor to the UrQuattro!

Okay, how about some link to your source that tells that this is VR5-engined? or is it just another of those "heard it from my buddy at halfords who heard it from his freinds brothers faterh who heard it from.." etc etc..?

I cant prove it, but take it or leave it. I really need a disclaimer, but there is a sound difference between the VR5 and inline 5 and that vid is of a VR5 engined TT-RS.

I totally forgot about this.

Apparently porsche pulled the plug on the 2.5 5cylinder engine, and the TT-RS could very wel have a 350hp 3.0 supercharged engine. All rumours ofcourse.

better stop reading car magazines info they write on yet to be released cars then. I have now twice seen a car mag print stuff about a upcoming audi in the past from what a usual audi source posted.

And then there are the BMW proactive lifestyle marketing guys who post on some forums also revealing info and insight as to why they do as they do.

But anyway, we will see this car, with whatever engine it is fitted with in a month. I hope its a inline 5.
