Winner: Week 72 - Theme chosen by 80Y 2C2

whole900gtp.jpg

THEME: Their words: "Adoption!

So this week I want everyone to look at another's (from GTP) style, and try to bring that back to their own work (through shooting and PP, or just PP). This sort of goes along the lines of what I have been working on in uni, to break free of one's own style in order to broaden their horizons. It'd be great if everyone could also state who's style they are trying to adopt. Communications with the artist is allowed."

VXR in the style of McLaren

I love this theme but admittedly I struggled with "adopting" a technique. I was trying to go for something along the lines of McLaren's shots from the Cars & Coffee events he goes too as he has a really distinctive style.

However, I'm not quite sure how he goes about getting the effects he does as my knowledge of post-production techniques is very limited. I have noticed that his reds and light blues really seem to stand out though wheras greens, yellows and darker colours seem to be less saturated, so that was the look I went for.

Regardless, he does what he does very well and if I could just adopt the technique as easy as that I think it'd reflect badly on both of us

Hmm, certainly a tough week. I had some trouble pinpointing a specific style for a lot of you guys. Some are obvious, others are varied enough to not have one particular style for me to replicate. I wanted to do LongbowX but the style of most of Chris' shots varies enough that he can't be pigeonholed. In the end I opted for SSU's latest desaturated and dark series from Donington Park. Also the image dimensions are a bit strange as I used the shot for something else some time back but I can't be bothered at present digging through all external HD to get the original file out.

Yay, I don't have a style.

I think you did a great job though on Sweetshop's though. Brilliant. And I don't mind the dimensions, it sort of works for me.

That's a great start, HFS. I can definatly see the strong reds and blues. 👍

Thanks. It's fair to say I had to do a bit of digging just to find a photo I'd taken which had some blue sky in the frame

I based my off Longbow. Most his shots seem to be upclose and in Black in White. Plus they usually seem to be muscle cars, so the front vents of a mid 60's Corvette in Black and White seemed perfect.

So, I guess this is my entry. Been looking through my photographs this afternoon and saw this one and thought it could be used. The member's style I was aiming for was Syntax Error's. I've stated before how I really like his style and while my own style isn't really specific think I do like to think I take a bit of inspiration from his work. I looked at his work for awhile to kind of get a idea of what he does PP wise. I came to the conclusion his photos are quite contrasty, and tend to have quite a warm tone probably due to him being in Australia . I kind of aimed to do the same thing. I know usually he favours more to panning shots, but I've seen some of his "static motorsport" stuff and think it's quite similar to this shot. Hopefully this will pretty close to what he does. Hopefully

Ok a tough one for me as you pro's on here have some great thoughts and angles. I noticed a few on here adopt close work like longbow,80Y 2C2,Speedster502 but not on a regular basis I guess this is down to professionalism. As a novice I have a lot to learn so to copy my style would of been so easy for you lol. So this week I have tried so imitate the above users talents with half a car and little enhanced colour.

EDIT: Fixed the size but my picture looks worse than before. My white is to blue. Man this learning curve is steep.

Black and White? Close up? Corvette? I APPROVE THIS IMAGE.

Muscle cars is a recent fad, as they had a Shelby exhibit at an Autoshow. I'm kind of running dry of shots at this point. Till May anyway. But I do love all you've mentioned. Close-ups and black and white. And Corvettes.

I think you did a good job. And you also stole who I wanted to do. Haha, but I had a back up. :sly:

I chose LongbowX to replicate as he always retains loads of detail in the highlights and shadows while still having a high-contrast appearance. He also uses very subtle colours, they don't pop off the image but more enforce the subject. I hope this has come across in my image.

Mm. I think you did a very good job. I am in a "black and white" phase, so I might have thought about changing this particular image to that (also because it reminds me of my own Mini Marcos shot - that I'll find and post later (now below) - which was black and white).

I honestly didn't expect this many entries for such a left of centre theme.

They are all awesome! Especially NISMO's. 👍

It's a really good theme, it makes you think a bit more usual. Great entries guys. 👍

My original line was Nismo_Skyline as he appears to use pics of older cars (the last 3/4 comps) but then I somehow on my first use of Photoshop recreated (well, it's more of an abomination ) of SweetshopUnion's desaturation type thing going on.
JU7L0429.jpg

Taken with my dad's ehhh camera (I'll find out which one) at the Jim Clark rally last year. The car is an Escort mark something getting all four wheels off the ground.
P.S. There is a bit of wierdness going on near the front bumper because I couldn't get close enough with the selecting tool to do the entire car with military precision. :P
There are three layers to it:
1-Whole picture desaturated heavily
2- some of the road and grass and the car desaturated a bit
3-only the car with that saturation pumped up a bit.

Any tips to improve on it for a noob 'shopper?
Thanks
Allyn

PPS: I have aleady selected my entry photo for next time. I don't care what the category is, I will try my damndest to make the photo fit!

I was gonna say Mark 2 but didn't want to be flamed to death by someone of superior knolwedge like you for example!

👍 Nice one Adam.

Hey so if you vote for the person that did your style, I guess that would almost be like voting for yourself. I think we might cause a tear in the spacetime continuum!

I thought I would choose someone who has quite a different style than me. I don't know how well I've captured his high-contrast look (and he embraces colour much more than I), but I gave it my best effort.

In the style of 80Y 2C2.

First off, thank you for the compliment. :)

As for the technique, it's very simple. I use a basic program called PhotoScape & the first thing I do is auto level & contrast the photos. After that, to bring out the colors, I use a low-to-mid amount of a film effect called "Cinema" that darkens up the shadows & other low visible colors. To help bring out brighter colors, I'll use a filter called "Provia". If I want to brighten everything up to finish it off, I'll add a small amount of "Portra".

All my technique is, is done through 4 or 5 filters & deciding how much of whatever filter I'm choosing to apply. The only learning curve is deciding how much to use & whether the application of 1 more filter looks good or not.

That's all there is to it b/c believe me, my knowledge of post-production is very limited as well. :)

Wow, thats pretty cool bananas, there Longbow. :D I reckon you did a good job, but its not really up to me because I don't entirely know what my own style is :P. The shot itself is awesome though, regardless of if you were trying something new or not.

👍

I really wish I could have entered this one, but uni work and social lives call even when I'm at home. I will deffs have a play around with something and put it up on my gallery, however.

Well...thank you. I'm glad you like it. That's the most important part: I have to do my perception of your "style" justice. I don't know what my style is either, yet more than one person did me. With remarkably different results, haha.

Mm. I wish you would have entered too of course, but we all sometimes don't have the time. I will eagerly await your gallery update, however.

Oh, just for the record. I was using my dad's Canon EOS-1D Mark 2. I liiiiike it [/end borat voice]
