Shallow depth of field.
What's this mean In a language I understand?

Doesn't matter Wikipedia Is my friend.

It is for people with expesive cameras... Unless someone can tell me how to do it with mine...
Unless I can simulate it in photoshop...? Is that possible?

On my cheap none fancy pants camera I'll set It on close up with face recognition switched on this should just focus mainly on the face box and blur the background.
I hope.

I will place my entry here later as not to spam.
I used the same process really on an old model entry but put the focus on the reflection although there wasn't as much out of focus as I'd of liked(seen below).
Hope this makes sense, I'm sure someone can explain It better.

You could use the blur tool In PS Is that allowed ?

Depth Of Field Guide PDF

If your camera lets you manually set your aperture (aperture priority) to a larger size opening (lower f value) then you can create a shallow depth of field but it can be done if post production with photoshop if it's allowed in the rules of the comp.

This would be an awesome entry as another example.

This is a shot of a kitchen knife blade I took a while ago that should illustrate shallow DOF.

The part of the shot that is in sharp focus is around 1/8" and everything closer and/or further away is, obviously, out of focus. This is taken to an extreme, of course, but the principle remains - as little in focus as necessary and some lovely out of focus thrown in for good measure.

I think I might have at least a couple of pics that suit the theme. Only have the std 18-55mm kit lens yet, so it's hard for me to get a shallow DOF image without "pressing" the lens against the subject...
Anyway, I'll post something by tomorrow morning. :)

TB - Hey buddy, what gear did you use to get that knife shot? Looks great!

I held an 18-55 kit lens backwards against a 50mm f/1.8 that was attached to a 500D. The 100% cropped version isn't the sharpest, but with this set up, I wouldn't expect it to be. :)

Edit: Like Floats said only without the cool adapter to hold the lens in place.

I think this one is good enough, atleast I hope.

Here's mine:

Looks really flat in the thumbnail, but better in full size.

I think my entry may cause some controversy. However, at no point do the rules say a car must be in the photograph, my photograph is still car related. It was taken at a event a Modified Live and is more of a atmospheric kinda shot but if your really picky there is a car in it. It's just hidden. If anyone has any major probelms with me entering this picture just say something and I'll change it but I have run it past Chris.

Well, it is the Automotive Photography contest, so the question is.. is this automotive...?

Unless it's just a guy walking down the street in full racing gear, the car is implied as it's pretty obvious that it must be nearby.

I think it's pushing the intent of the comp, but I vote it stays. 👍

The car is there... Top left?
Anyway, I'm not entering this. First reason, I have no idea how I would do it on my camera. Secondly, I have nothing in my current pics and seeing as it is dark outside I can't be bothered taking a photo :P

Hmm, I'm not arguing.. but maybe for future contests this might be the kinda thing that needs defining in the rules, drivers, grid-girls/pit-babes, race-tracks, they all make good subject matter for photography and are automotive related, but rarely used in photo comps, I would imagine because most would assume they are outside of the rules...

.. like I say I'm not arguing, if it flys then we will probably get more variety in future ... (and I can start snapping the babes legitimately ;) )

Anyway... since I'm here..

the wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of field for that focal length.

I think it would be good to open this competition up a bit wider, I've got plenty of shots to do with the atmosphere of a event (like the track) or the pit area which aren't directly related to cars but are still Automotively themed. I know quite a few people like doing that kind of photography, it's something that recently has taken my interest, looking at the drivers and the way people are working around the pits is sometimes more interesting than the races themselves.

But to be fair my image does still fit the theme, which is generally the most important thing. In future, if I do win again at any point I intend to do some more themes revolving around the kind of thing I just mentioned. I think it could open some peoples eyes up to seeing more than just what goes on on the actual race course.

I'll be interested to see how it turns out, in terms of peoples opinions. I knew I'd be pushing it a bit in terms of if people would accept it.

Mate calm down your entry is fine. :)

Whether or not the car is in the shot, it wouldn't change my choice of stock image to use - just so long as it has an automotive theme, which this obviously has.

I remember one theme I chose was Automotive on a stick, and most of the entries there didn't have cars in them, just road signs, which is still automotive.
