Yay! I love this kind of thing. I'll definately either have something in my archive, or take one today for this.

Had quite a few that suited the theme, couldn't decide which one to use, I think this one ended up being the most "different" one of the lot I had, at least in editing.

Roo, how did you get there? Was it Free Practise or something?

In the evenings the track was open to cycle around, including the pitlane. Mad Croc were practicing pitstops on Saturday night (specifically 2 mechanics changing all 4 tyres). They did 3 pitstops whilst I was there, and I could hear them from the campsite after I left. I didn't get many even slightly decent photos of them - low light = slower shutter speeds + manual focusing + quick moving subject = frustration. Yeah, I'm getting my excuses in early :)

Ah, gotcha.
You have the same problem as me with the D5000, no internal focusing motor. Lots of great deals in older great lenses that I had to pass because of that. A couple of weeks ago I could've gotten a 70-210 f/4 for €140. :banghead:

How hard is to focus manually in car events? I take it it's most of the time exasperating... What lens did you use for that shot?

Ah right, wish I'd stuck around for a bit after the race, but typical parents wanted to leave. Infact, if I hadn't persuaded them we would have left half way through the Qualifying Race. But still, I like the shot! It's something a bit different from what everyone else has shown so far.

Anyway.

It depends on the shot you're after. Straight or side-on I can usually get fairly sharp - just pre-focus on the tarmac on the racing line and you're set for when the car arrives - but it can be very frustrating on 3/4 shots as the car is coming towards you. If something happens that I'm not expecting, like a car arriving into frame backwards in a cloud of dirt, all I can do is keep the shutter button pressed, twiddle the focus ring and hope for the best. One day I'll get an auto-focus telephoto lens, but that's a while off yet.

What lens did you use for that shot?

A Nikkor 70-210 f4. It used to belong to my dad, who used it on his Nikon film SLR. When I got the D40 he still had the 70-210 but no (working) body to use it on, so he gave it to me.

Yeah, going to car events by yourself rocks, from a photography point of view. I was there for 11-12 hours a day at Silverstone, as I was camping on-site. It's the same at Goodwood - arrive about 7.30am, leave about 9pm. The only thing to worry about is battery life. And dinner.

But still, I like the shot! It's something a bit different from what everyone else has shown so far.

Thanks! It looks like everyone's posted something different so far... choosing which photo to vote for isn't going to be easy.

Owing to having to focus through fences I have found that MF as opposed to AF has been required at most recent events, but I have found that it requires about 40:1 ratio between 'good photo' and 'erase photo'. :( Media accreditation doesnt make you a better photographer, just means you don't have FENCES to deal with GRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr.
