Avoid Credit card theft

Here is a simple way to avoid getting your number stolen online.
At Walmart they have PSN, itunes, ect that you can buy there.
I would trust walmart with my card, but online sources not as much, just buy the cards at walmart and use them when you make online purchases.

Simplest way to have your credit card cloned is to give it to someone else...

I would trust walmart... except vhat, despite being the biggest company in the world, my local asda still sees fit to put all things playstation behind a stupid pillar! Its crazy!

I was out for lunch a few days ago and our ditz waitress gave us someone's tip-slip and credit card instead of our bill. :scared: She just put it on the table and walked away. I said, "Sorry, hun, but I'm not Joan somethingsomethingsomething." Good thing we are scrupulous peoples.

edit: Yes, I called her hun.

Its quite funny to suggest giving a credit card to a person is more secure than giving it to a machine

I dont let my CC out of my sight when I am out. If I'm at a restaurant, I make them bring the card reader to me or I follow them to it.

I've seen how easy it is to clone a card; I am not taking any chances.

This is very true. And I think it's something that doesn't occur to people.

Apparently restaurant servers have been caught using scanning device to scan all their customer's credit cards during their walks from the tables to the register counter.

People have also been caught in grocery store lines, somehow taking photos of people's credit cards as they take them out to slide them through the machine.

My card # was stolen probably in the Barnes & Noble breach a couple of years ago.
At the bank I joined after that, having told them what happened having my card # stolen, they told me about NUMEROUS recent breaches they knew about in the area, that had NOT been publicized!! Apparently local breaches at stores happen pretty regularly, and lots of times it's HUSHED UP (so as not to "create a consumer scare". So unless you work at a bank that's had their cards effected, you may never hear about it!

And the woman at the bank gave me these tips:

= Use your debit card "as credit" at stores if you're not getting cash back, so that there's no chance anyone's going to see your pin number entered
= Use self scanning credit card machine where available (instead of handing it to someone)
= Don't give it to a restaurant server to take away & bring back - go to the register with them.
= In store lines, at counters, etc, always hide the number on the credit card from view with your hand
= Check your bank statement online regularly, monitoring the activity.

How about don't worry so much about getting your credit card stolen. Typically the credit card company is way on top of it and it costs you nothing. The last time my credit card number was stolen I was overnighted a new card and it was in my wallet by the next morning.

The only thing to worry about with getting your credit card stolen is if you have automatic payments on your stolen credit card number. For that, I have all automatic payments on a card that I use essentially for nothing else.

When my number was taken a while back, that was the only thing that went wrong. AT&T was all like, "Sup, brah?" And I was all like, "Oh hey, I thought you got that? No? Sure. Here ya go!"

Doesn't stop you from being totally stressed out. Especially if its your debit card. I look forward to seeing what happened with this PS3 nonsense. I can't remember if I put my credit card info in there or not...

You should probably just sign in and check...

Especially if its your debit card.

The debit card... on the otherhand... I am VERY careful with. Debit cards are dangerous. Credit card companies want you using their card as often as possible and go out of their way to make it easy for you not to worry about it getting stolen. Debit cards are not as well monitored, have multiple institutions involved (who can point fingers at each other) and are tied directly to your bank account. That's a much more dangerous scenario if your number gets out.

Another reason to hate the debit card is that you can't get cash back from it, so you're literally throwing away money by using it. Also, if they accept your debit card, they accept your VISA credit card, which you can get cash back on. I do not recommend a debit card in any scenario other than emergency cash from an ATM.

Because everyone pays more in interest rates & fees, to cover the cost of insuring those thefts.
💡 :rolleyes::eek:

Interest rates and fees? I don't understand. Why would you pay those? You only pay those if you don't pay off your card at the end of the month, and nobody in their right mind would do something like that.

So assuming you're not crazy, you should never have to pay interest rates or fees. I don't know or care what the interest rates on my cards are.

Hello dear reader,

I am a young prince from Zimbabwe who has just come across a very large sum of Gold. I would like to share this Gold with you based on a simple transaction, if interested please leave you SS #, a picture ID & of course a number you can be reached when I'm ready to wire you your Gold money.

Than you so much dear reader. Love, Rufus.

My wife and I use one card purely for online purchases so if anything odd should happen to show up, it will be easy to spot. Using one card for everything - something is more likely to slip through, especially with as much as we use ours.
I don't know or care what the interest rates on my cards are.
Agreed. All I care is what they'll give me for the privilege of having me as a cardholder.

I won't believe you pal, you said just Rufus and everyone knows that Prince Rufus is actually the prince of Zimbabwe. :P

I actually use my only card a lot online and in offline transactions too, however even living in one of the most hacker-prone countries in the world I haven't been frauded. Call me lucky or not, the credit card company has several defense mechanisms for example blocking too high or too low transactions ( high and low values are determined by your billing history ), even though I believe in these security measures I wouldn't be surprised if I were frauded. These things just happen.

Cancelled my debit card today.

The store where i word does not well PSN cards, we sell Games for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS as well as their consoles.

Not all places will have the PSN card, but now i have to re-enter my new debit card details when it comes into steam and all the other places

I don't understand why more people don't regularly check their statements. I check mine every 2 or 3 days just in case. I've caught someone charging something on my card I didn't approve and they contacted me immediately and within a day the money was back in my account. No harm done.

Just get a PSN card and call it a day sheesh there everywhere
Some places add tax to the cards. No thanks.

Check with your banks for starters.

In Bank of America, you are given a free browser-based tool that allows you to create a temporary credit card number tied to your main credit card. The temporary number can be anything your imagination tells you, you set the expiration date, and even set the amount of money allowed for that number for any given transaction. This allows you to purchase items online without giving your real information at all.

Another way of avoiding credit card theft is using Green Dot cards. You can find them in almost any store and are easily refilled with cash. Green Dot cards can be used the same way as your regular card.
