Aww crap, there goes another CD-RW.

Alright, I'm not sure on the exact time but I'd say 6 months ago at the max we had our computer in because it was lagging pretty badly and the cd-rewriter wasn't working.

Turns out the hdd was on it's way out the door and the cd-rw had already dug it's own grave - thanks to a burnt out lense.

So we got the hdd replaced (he put in a 30GB, we had a 20GB beforehand, score) and out went the HP CD-RW and in went a Sony CD-RW.

So everything was fine and dandy up until about a few weeks ago. I tried to copy a, ahem - movie (X-Men2), but it wouldn't write, all it did was spin up, then spin down, spin up, then spin back down again. The cd-writing software (B's Recoder Gold) would keep on freezing and ctrl+alt+del would do nothing and I would be forced to shut it down manually, all this time the CD-RW was still spinning up and down. I tried it with Nero, but to no avail.

I thought 'Well maybe the movie has some copyright on this disc' so I just dismissed it and left it as is.

Come to tonight, I want to write some, uhh movies (;)) to my collection and the same thing is happening again.

So I've come to the conclusion that this CD-RW is now stuffed, I wasn't in the mood to try trouble shooting, so hey, maybe I'll be able to sort it out, but I need to vent.

This has pissed me off soooooo much, this CD-RW has probably written a total of about 10 CD's in it's lifetime! Why should it crap out all of a sudden? We haven't treated it poorly, we always treat our electronics with greatest car because it costs ****loads to repair. I think it's about time to upgrade to a newer better computer. One that isn't made by Hewlett Packard, one that actually has at least some design put into it.

Die mainstream computer companies die!

(It's 2 in the morning and I'm pissed off, gimme a break)

I know how you feel about these expensive things breaking. When we first bought our $3000 or so home theater reciever, it crapped out on us. We took it back and a month later it was fixed. So we buy a $1800 top of the line 5 disk dvd player, that dies and we take that back in, and we still havn't gotten it back yet. I hate that, thank god for warranties though...

About your CDRW, may I suggest trying to burn something other than movies first, just waste a cd and try to put stupid things on there, like the "my documents" folder or something. If that doesn't work I dunno what to tell ya.

http://www.alienware.com is a cool place, they are in conjunction with best buy, which is my favorite electronics store (aside from 'the stereo shoppe'). Maybe you can build your own computer even, use parts from http://www.compuplus.com, my computer's made from there and I don't have a damn thing wrong with it.... I shouldn't have said that.... :(

have fun.:D

Alienware is so overpriced. Check out Dell or Gateway. I have a computer with a dead CD-RW and a dead video card. But my laptop is better so I've had no motivation to do anything about it.

You should perhaps try writing discs with information for which you own the copyright. This would at least determine whether any protection on the disc was causing the issues.

Hmm, I tried writing my car videos (burnouts, dynos and the like) as a video CD. It burnt about 32k worth of folders onto it I've got no idea why.

So I try to write the same videos on as a data CD, it wrote alright, but at the end started the spin up spin down thing and it still hasn't ejected the disk. The writing software froze as well.

:irked:

Well my ASUS CD-RW is stuffed to, it seams nobody can make decent computers. I can burn CD-R's with nero fine but the audio seizes, then when trying to format a CD-RW with In-CD the whole thing freezes.

I can take the computer in with the warranty on it and get a quote and all but I can't be bothered.

Cobraboy:
Take it in somehwere and get a quote to see how much it will cost to fix it other wise buy a new computer.
With the PC Company in NZ going into receivership I would go with TL Systems, I think do some research and computers and getting cheaper everday - oh and don't get anything fron Noel Lemmings, or Dick Smithhhhs because they have mainstream pc crap.

damn your cd burner sucks, mine ive had for about a year and a half and it still writes at 24x

*cough* Try and find a wholesale retailer in Auckland of computer parts...then put together your own list and get the quote from the place...using their prices. That's what I am doing now and it works great. I can soon say goodbye to this laptop crap (Well, it's a good computer...just really slow). :D

Yeah I already have.

It's currently sitting at NZ$868 (damn, 1 short ;)) minus monitor, keyboard + mouse and os. With my miniscule $70-ish a week, it'll take me just over 10 weeks to have every part needed to run, I could live with that.

Yep. Have you looked into warranties as well? You know they can be helpful...Also, try and ask someone who knows alot about computers (Shannon, Giles, Viper Zero, etc) about your list...they're quite helpful with telling you if the parts all match together and stuff.

Monitor is the most expensive thing...;) That will probably put you over 1000NZ.

Are you using a high speed burner - 48x12x48 or somewhere around there? Chances are you are using crappy CDs that aren't designed for high speed burners. I had a problem like that where the drive would spin up, then slow down and spin up again.

I put in the blank CD that came with my burner (on the label it said Professional High Speed) and it burned perfectly at 48x. Try burning at slower speeds.

I've burned to these discs before at 40x, which is what they're rated it at.

Vasco, no need to ask, I already know what goes with what and how to put it there, but if something doesn't go right, you'll know the first people I'll come running to ;)

Yeah, I was burning at 48x happily and then all of sudden, it didn't want to. I ended up having to burn at 24x to backup my stuff.

Try burning at half of your top burning speed (eg. 4x down to 2x).
