I know this is probably only indirectly related at best, but the lens on my PS3 died on me overnight while I was running automated sessions of B-Spec remote racing (I just got it replaced earlier today).

This got me thinking, when running remote races all day, that's a lot of disc access when you consider it needs to load the track from the disc every single race. Over an extended period of time, I imagine this would put quite a strain on various mechanisms of the optical drive.

It's too bad there's no option to install the ENTIRE contents of the disc onto the hard drive, so that the only time disc access is necessary is to check that the GT5 disc is loaded.

The game will mostly load from the hard drive, reducing as many loading from the disc as possible. I haven't come across this yet, but I sure hope I don't.

I'm sure it's an isolated incident, but I also noted that when this happened to me, GT5 froze at the track loading screen. Seems like a bit of a coincidence if there was no disc access occuring at that time.

How did you get a new lens?

I am sooo fed up. I get around 60% crash rate and this game is driving me so mad. Just lost one car as I tried to get it from the truck and the game froze as I accepted it. Waitied 5 mins and the screen came on but the car was gone. Can't tell you how frustrating this is.

I think its a stupid idea to have a disc in all the time. It defo does harm to our machines. But I also think there is some kind of bug getting into a few machines. I only use my PS3 for racing and its pretty much new.

Also, if I want to use my G25 I have to power down the machine and connect the wheel as GT5 will not work the wheel if I just plug it in. And that means several boots until the game starts. Again, driving me so mad. I have a play seat and my 2k system built into the wall so I have to get OUT of my playseat several times and take the disc out and put it back in again in the vain hope it works.

Soon I will give up. Maybe a new lense will work? But I need to do something soon

A new lens replacement is a very specific repair option only if your PS3 stops recognizing discs inserted into the console. I found a reputable 3rd party to service my machine.

In your case, I'm not sure what the problem might be. I'd start with the easy stuff, like deleting the entire GT5 install and any cached data, then re-installing it. Your machine might also be overheating, causing the instability you're describing.

Thank you so much! I think a reinstall is a good idea. Will research more on how to do that.

Its not overheating as I had the PS3 off all night. Just turned it on to collect a car when I got the blank screen for 5 mins and lost the car.

Anyway, had enough for now so will try another day. But thanks again for your good advise.

Have fun
