Bad smell after bad clutch usage?

Today my father and I were driving with my MX-5 NC and my dad decided to drive. He has been driving in a car with an automatic transmission for the past years, so driving a manual again was a bit hard... On a little hill he stepped on the gas pretty hard and let the clutch slip a lot. After that there was a bad smell in the car. The smell was gone pretty fast, but I had the feeling that it was caused by the bad clutch usage. Is that possible or should I worry something is broken now?

He slipped the clutch too much- the clutch plates slipping (too much throttle while clutch is partially engaged) generates heat quite quickly which can cause a 'burnt clutch smell'. It's quite a sharp, acrid smell.

Unless he does it on a regular basis it's nothing to worry about.

Seems like you already know what happened

If you have issues with clutch slippage under power you might have a glazed clutch. Don't worry about this too much.
