Welcome to BotB!

The rules are as follows:
Each week two pieces of music will be selected following a theme. You vote for the piece you like the best. In voting, try to make your decision based on how well the piece is performed, the content and the level of work that went into it. Do not vote purely on the basis of a good video or because one band has a particularly better history or whatever. You're comparing two songs and that's it. The poll will be open for a week following the announcement of the contenders. Enjoy.

This week the topic is songs that talk about are neighbouring planet, Mars. Although the artists aren't bands, they've both been very successful solo singers. I now present Life on Mars by David Bowie Vs Rocket Man by Elton John

Rocket Man is a classic. Life on Mars is too, but it's more of an acquired taste. I love them both, but I gotta give it to Elton John.

John/Taupin in this case. Life on Mars is a good track (and I went to school with bass player's daughter and have enjoyed many an afternoon drinking in the sun close to the Mick Ronson Memorial Lavatories in Queen's Gardens, Hull).

However, the magic of Life on Mars is often in the personae and "back story" created by Bowie at the time. For me Rocket Man employs greater musicality to evoke a sense of soaring flight with tones of both sadness and celebration.

Always been more of a Bowie fan. Rocket Man gets old after hearing it 10 million times. EVERYWHERE.
