Beater or Sleeper? GT6 Car of the Week Thread

Farewell orange 'Vette No.34. Having spent a whole week with her I admit that my feelings towards her have softened somewhat and maybe, just maybe, she won't be put under dust covers in the warehouse. Still not a beater, yet no sleeper either but we had some fun together, and in my book she's alright :)

This is the Saturday night COTW race at Spa and I will upload some of the other races on my channel (link is in my sig) over the next day or so along with the Bonus Race at Flusterkuc B, which had nothing at all to do with Corvettes of any description, only dubious $2M price tags!

EDIT - Worryingly, once again, three drivers appear to be missing from my view of the race who are quite clearly there on @McClarenDesign 's Twitch recording. Whereas I appear to be running in a field of 6, there were 9 drivers on track at the start and then 8 after the first corner. BilboStig and KlapperLP are the missing cars. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

Found this - https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/invisible-cars.314370/ so I've set up the DMZ on my router for the PS3 to see if it might help prevent this happening. Fingers crossed.

Here is @McClarenDesign 's video with the full grid - luckily the glitch didn't result in me wiping anyone out!

It seems weird to be considering a corvette for a beater or a sleeper.

It also seems weird that this is somehow considered a mark of success, something to aspire to and save your retirement for. Doubly so when you consider that the ingress/egress was finally fixed for this and subsequent models. And since the Audi quattro kept up with it in battle, does that also make the SUV a "supercar"?

Beater or sleeper? I'd slap it silly before taking a nap.

Congratulations rosckolove! Your astute observation (no sarcasm, I agree with you, but also with a few caveats that deserve a thread all their own) has earned you this week's pick! If the vette (and Spyker, and Ferrari, and a few other exotics previously chosen) seem weird, what would be a more appropriate car to consider?

I race 500 PP cars at the Nurburgring online and everyone considers this car slow due to its lazy front end, however I have managed to turn it into a beast. I didn't see it, or anything too similar on the list.

It's the 2007 BMW M3 Coupe!

Wait... really? The Corvette seems like an odd choice, but you've given us a car whose acronym stands for (expletive) Marry Wealth?

Meh, works for me, though I disagree about the front end. My biggest complaint about BMWs is that they turn in like a rabid terrier on cocaine.

Guess it's time to break out the polo shirts, bluetooth earpieces and Oakley sunglasses.

Congratulations also to @Vic Reign93 for his "it's not cheating, I swear" time of 3:29.779 with the '00 Chevrolet Corvette C5-R. This week's Playing With TTs! is at the High Speed Eifel, a track created by billsippi.

McClaren, but isn't that a picture of a late 5-Series model...?

...ah, never mind, it's a standard procedure getting the wrong car pictures for COTW, no need to complain about it.

Still, the M3... can't say that I hate, but it's not a car which I'm particularly excited to drive either. Maybe it's the unnecessary hype the E30 received, or the fact that BMW doesn't know what to do with their sports car lineup anymore, splitting the M3 in two "distinct" cars in form of the 5-door M3 F80 and the not-so-amazing-and-grossly-overpriced-compared-to-other-M3s M4. Either that or I just prefer bolder sedans, I dunno...

Must we also consider the furious M3 GT2 racing car in this German equation, terrible sound issues aside?

Oh giggety! I love me some NA S65 V8 action. I have a great many tunes to share for this car. A stock one will be run up the Mt Washington Hill Climb course for comparison to last week's C5 Z06. I will do that later today, as well as the TT. Should be a great week!

A couple of tunes from the FITT M Power Test: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/thre...s-to-the-winners.329457/page-13#post-10796359

...and a couple more from @Ridox2JZGTE's Replica Garage (his tunes are amazingly detailed)

The Pikes Peak Quattro comparison bugs me a bit, we're talking about a one-off concept car that as far as I know never turned any recorded laps or was driven by someone outside of Audi. The more I see this huge behemoth somehow running circles around pure sports cars the more I think the driving physics behind it are an extreme level of "Hopelessly Optimistic." Might as well compare the Corvette to the VGT's or Mario's Kart if we're allowing hypothetical cars.

My review proper will be a little late this week, just picked up a PS4 bundled with the "Uncharted" Trilogy for an early Christmas/Birthday Present for myself.

Well, the front headlights are somewhat similar to those found in a 5-Series, so if I am wrong at least I have a justifiable reason to explain my misunderstanding, haha. :sly:

Same here.

I can only assume he was busy because here's what I found after 5 minutes. :D

Granted it's slightly visually modified, but it IS a 3 series, it is also an M3 just by comparing the stock exhausts to these ones. :P:tup:

What we have on the chopping block this week is a 3,999 cc naturally-aspirated V8 that revs to 9,000 rpm. You heard correctly. 9,000 rpm from a V8. How often does that happen? The E92 is the only generation of M3 to receive a V8. The others make do with 4 or 6 cylinders. That makes this car quite special indeed.

BMW M3 Coupé '07
4.0L
415 hp / 8,500 rpm
295 ft-lb / 4,000 rpm
1,655 kg (3,649 lbs)

It makes over 100 hp/L without forced induction. It carries 8.8 lbs/hp. The torque figure leaves a little to be desired, but I quite find 295 ft-lbs to be enough as it prevents loss of traction from giving it too much gas on corner exit. It is somewhat on the porky side, but not quite as fat as some other luxury sports cars.

Looks like its main competition is the Jaguar XKR Coupe '10, Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG (R230) '04, and Aston Martin DB9 Coupe '06. I'll have to re-test those three cars as it has been several months. The M3 is freshly re-tested as of tonight, as can be seen by the published date on youtube.

I think it handles exceptionally well. I'm calling it a sleeper. You could remove all the M badges and it would look mostly like any ordinary 3 series. It's faster than a Ford Mustang Boss 302 '13 :boggled: Yes I have to re-test that car tomorrow as well, as that doesn't really make any sense!

You guys are so good at finding stuff - all I got was this:

bmwm3_zpsng14omqu.jpg

That's an M3, right?
Not sure if beater or sleeper . . . very confused right now.

LOL I think you "should have gone to SpecSavers" @photonrider 'cause I swear that's Barbie's mom, you 🤬 dog you!

What do youi expect after she's had her head pulled off at random occasions for years and thrown into a toybox with a lecherously-dressed Ken? It's enough to age the best of us. :D

Good win on the seasonal though - I think I only scraped in about a second ahead and that was in the GTO (Ferrari, not Pontiac).

The Corvette did surprise me - I think we expect too much of it because of its pedigree, but for the price and the looks it is value, and that firmly takes it away from the Beater status.
In the hands of a good wheelman it definitely has potential, the potential to perform as promised from its looks and pedigree; this car can be very deceptive at speed, and therefore what one is mistaking for understeer is actually approaching a corner too fast and being unable to make the turn.
With a supercharger and a custom tranny to match my style of shifting it was transformed from what could be taken as a Beater (not delivering its promise) to an intriguing Sleeper (performing a lot better than expected.)

Nice model. The lines, curves and details are just right, and that's just the M3 Coupe.

But to be fair I was going for classy and correct, not assy and incorrect.

To save you some time, I went ahead and contacted The History Channel for you, because that's definitely a first.

well after some TT action with the BMW at the High Speed Eifel...
@McClarenDesign in second at the moment with a 2:32.026

You sure about that?

@Baron Blitz Red on the top step with a 2:31.426 run..
@McClarenDesign in second at the moment with a 2:32.026
@OGGamer in third with 2:32.782

Still hanging onto that third by the skin of my teeth I see but Vic hasn't even made a run at it yet and I really can't see overtaking the 3:31's set by the current leaders. I have no idea where I would find a second or more per lap :boggled:.

I'm about to try out the TT if anyone wants to join for some practice laps.

Also, I re-tested the Ford Mustang Boss 302 '13 and, after some struggling, managed a clean lap of 1:21.1 which is the exact same time as the M3. I was 0.408 seconds faster this time in the Boss 302, but, like the BMW, could not for the life of me break into the 1:20's. Still, it amazes me that the M3 is as quick as the Boss.

The Ford has 1,000 more cc's of engine displacement, 28 more horses, 85 more ft-lbs of torque, and weighs 8 kg less than the BMW. So why isn't it faster? Well, gearing, suspension, and weight distribution play major roles. The BMW has perfect 50:50 weight front to rear, while the Ford is nose-heavy at 54:46.

The numbers dont tell everything. You cant use all that power in the same way with the Boss that you can with the E92. The Boss has a tendency to blow the tires away out of corner, just like the C5 Z06 last week did. The M3 doesnt have the torque to spin the tires, unless you provoke it. Lap times usually come from how much performance you can use, not how much you have. I might need to retest my own Boss 302 now though.

BTW... I hope I dont come across biased, because I'm genuinely not biased. I actually really like all three cars mentioned.

After watching your lap in the M3 I had a go myself and, after much trying I got it round in 1:20.746 but that was the only lap I broke out of the 1:21's which would seem to be the pace at which it runs consistently.

The BMW does handle well for a sports saloon (sedan) car and the M3 moniker it wears is there for good reason. As to whether it's a beater or a sleeper in the context of GT6 I'd say it's neither. Most definitely not a beater and only really a sleeper if you are unfamiliar with the whole M3 designation on BMW's, otherwise you expect performance from the car as a given. The car is quick, it handles fairly predictably and is fun to drive. My only criticism of the car in the game is the awful engine/exhaust note that has been assigned to it.

I just re-tested the BMW M3 '04 to see how much slower it is than the '07 version.

Well, the E92 has a 76 hp and 26 ft-lb advantage over the E46. However, the E46 makes up for the deficit somewhat with a 85 kg (187 lb) advantage over the E92.

With all that math out of the way, I got down to business and after several flying laps, I ended with a best lap that was exactly one full second slower than the E92.

A moderate sleeper car for 500pp races (for Nurburgring) if you tune and drive it correctly, from my experience.

Saw a guy lapping the M3 '07 8:54 on the 24 hr Nurburgring track 500pp races with real grip and slipstream.

Wow... I know there are many variables here in GT6, and they affect different cars differently but YIPES!

I had less than 100km's on my 2007 M3 Coupe but after just 625 km's on her, Mellissa at GTAuto is telling me its body rigidity has already begun to deteriorate!

Does BMW stand for Beater Makes Work???

Cheers

Crashing less might help with that :P
