Beginner drifting questions.

I'm new to the team, and pretty new to GT3. I've been practicing my drift for about a week. I've pulled off 1 half-succesful drift so far and I've got some basic questions:

1) What speed and gear should I enter a turn in for a drift? (I.E. U-turn in the middle of Apricot Hill) How can I judge what speed and gear to enter?

2) I either understeer or spinout every single time :banghead: ... any ideas?

3) When should I apex for the drift? (I.E. U-turn in the middle of Apricot Hill)

4) It's terribly hard to get the back tires to lose their grip just the way I want them to using the breaking technique... what am I doing wrong?

Thanks :D

Hello and welcome to GTP :)

Here are my answers to your all of your questions:

1) For high-speed drifts like the U-turn on Apricot Hill, you should be able to go around 70-80 MPH with simulation tires. You may be able to pull off some faster speeds with different tires, but then someone else like Night_Drifter knows how fast you can go with other tires that aren't simulation tires. It depends on which car you are in, but try to stay in 4th gear for that corner. The gear depends on each car, but usually, follow the one that the red blinking light indicates. All of this varies to style. What I state from here on out is what I do when I drift :)

2) Try to remember: you don't need to floor the throttle or countersteer all the way. If you have trouble keeping the car drifting, here's what you need to remind yourself with: tap the throttle and countersteer a little bit. If the car is oversteering, countersteer more and if the car is understeering, increase the throttle. By the time you balance these, you'll be at the end of the corner. For the U-turn on Apricot Hill, you have to approach it late into the corner because it's such a big corner.

3) Apex the U-turn on Apricot Hill about 3/4 of the turn.

4) What car are you using? Try using some settings from the Settings Depot :)

I hope you can understand this :D

What's the best turn to practice a night, tight, braking drift in? Opinions are fine.

A night, tight braking drift? Do you mean like SSR5 course? The tightest corner IMO in GT3 is the first right-hander on Tokyo R246 :D the picture is my avatar

<-------- The picture under my name :D

I meant to ask for a /nice/ tight drift instead of a night, tight drift... darn my impatience :P

I'm currently working on drifting my 86 tuned as recommended by the depot. My other hopefulls are my fully tuned RX-7 FC and my MR2 G-Limited.

Thanks for the help so far :D

hmm you might want to try Tokyo R246 II. for me that aws the first track to master drifting. the really BIg u-turn in the track. try it. it's Fun:D :D

and Welcome to GTP

You're so right about that, it's not even funny. I apreciate it and all the help so far, keep it rolling in ^_^

With you guys around, I'll hopefully become the racer I want to be in a couple more weeks of practice.

O.o

The AE86 is a car to be tamed with. When you drift that car, you know when you drift when you see smoke in the rear. Sometimes, the tires don't make that burning rubber sound. Good luck! Also, there are other good cars to try out also. They are in the Drift Depot :)

start with super soft then you will get use to it to make ur car very fast on drifting on any corner, ohh to drift big corners, make sure you let go of the accel button and push it back, but do it fast, or just let it slide and then push the X button when you feel like ur slowing down

super soft tires? that gives you TOO much grip. first try and mess around with tires and see which one you like whether it's super soft or sim tires. imo sim tires are the best :D :D

Thanks for the advice :D

I'm currently using super-softs in front and softs in back, I'm getting better with practice... but I slow down to much during the drift. Any more advice?

I'm using my fully tuned 86 and RX-7 FC (my goddess btw). Off and on I'll hook up the good ol MR2 g-limited.

Oh and one more thing... how exactly do you get the back tires to peel out without turning your front ones in alot? It seems simple enough in theory, but I just can't get it to work.

USE SIM TIRES. on most any FR vehicle with a drift-oriented suspension setup, the rear end will swing out by itself when the accelerator is pressed. deffinatly learn to drift on sim tires, you'll gain a lot more skill of controlling a vehicle, plus the drifts will look spectacular. if you're trying to win races, don't drift..it's much slower than grip.

Now that all depends on who you're racing and the stage I think. In courses like trial mountain, I believe drifting the entire course would be faster.

You have to feint drift the car before you enter the corner. Actually, I just noticed that I never countersteer when I drift 4WD's :P

edit: most of the time :D

Well, I'm looking around and I've noticed there aren't any setting lists that give the settings for an 86 with Sim tires. And I undoubtibly believe that my 86 turns faster throw a corner with a slide than if i slowed down for the grip. My FC on the other hand is a whole nother story.

Well, there aren't any settings for the 86 with simulation tires because all you need to do is slap on some simulation tires. That's all you need to do :)

Yes, but then you're left with absolutely no straightaway power. There's no all downhill courses in GT3, so the power does make the difference.

I apreciate the opinions and criticism LanEvo ^_^ And I agree with you, the faster the better. And there's no mistake drifting sure is showy, but I believe there's a usefullness to it when it comes to the faster track record.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, have yourselves a lovely night :D

what are you guys saying, power does make little bit, my STI 22B has 500 HP or so, and the Trueno is 300HP or less i dont know, but i lost to the trueno, on Trial Mountian, they do have down hill, its how you drive and it all matter about the turning if ur racing for reals but yeah if u go with 1000 HP versus 300 HP then its different

Well Trial Mountain is all about the turns, there's 2 long straigtaways where the sheer power shows off. But you can only really show it off right before you enter the turn. then it's brake time :D The trueno beat you probably because he didnt have to slow down as much for the turn, or maybe it's because the AI takes a line unlike any human...
Or maybe it's so intimidating you lost concentration. :P

But earlier when I was refering to drifting, I meant four wheel drifting. You know, the whole turn at a constant speed thing? May sound silly or it may sound impossible, but hey, I'm no expert. I just like turning in way too early and sliding the car to the apex then slamming on the gas. It's just fun. :D

And I apreciate the compliment akina_86, I only consider myself smart in 3 respects though. 1) Super Smash Brothers Melee, 2) Marketing, and 3) Maybe a little web development. But driving is quite possibly not my strong suit :P
