Electricity briefly competed with petrol as a fuel source. In London the Electric cab Company ran a fleet of battery powered taxi's with a range of 80 km. The driver braked by reversing the battery connections so the cells recharged as the cab slowed down.

The Bersey Cab had a 40 cell battery that produced just 3 BHP, with 80 km between charges.
