Loved the first one, since for me it was the first game that gave me the chance to play real cars from a cockpit view. And the crashes were entertaining, even though it was weird how the camera zoomed out to show you them. But for me my favourite was Hot pursuit 2 on the PS2.

Hot Pursuit 2 was immense!
There is a Need For Speed section just above the Console and PC Gaming section by the way.....

Porsche Unleashed on PC by a mile. But Underground 1 was also great, that gets the silver. Imo, all the cop NFS games are trash.

The original one was by far the best. They went downhill very sharply after that.

I think Shift may have the capability of being better, but I haven't played it properly (only the demo)

The only one I like is Shift, it's not bad. I haven't played every game in the series but I've played quite a few. The ones featuring police chases were fun, but only for about half an hour. Shift has a long way to go but it's a really good start if they are really trying a genuine series reboot.

I have to say the very first one !! felt solid... (GT games feels that way...)

Hot Pursuit was entertaining ... but really my heart would have to go with the First One!

No hesitation about it ;)

For me, it definately was N4S: High Stakes (a.k.a NFS 4), PSone version miles ahead of the pc version. I played the Psone one lol, by the standarts of back than, it was great, I especially loved you could drive in rain, during night, or a snowstorm, whatever you wish, besides I loved you could choose the native language of the police of the country you were driving in, so cool.

Played it like 8 months every day, it was my first 3D-game ever, oh the good old times.:(

Hot Pursuit 2 very closely followed by III:Hot Pursuit.

Both games have stolen many hours of my life and ive still got III for PC somewhere.:)

NFS Hot Pursuit 2, first game I bought on Xbox classic as a kid. I didn't play the ones before but IMO the franchise has gone downwards since Underground 2.

The first one was my first PC game ever, best of all time is Porsche Unleashed followed closely by High Stakes on PC, whoever said it was better on PS1 doesn't know ****. Underground 2 was a great game in lan parties for free roaming multiplayer.

For me the best would be the one you had to live with if you only had one. The first NFS would not be it by a long shot. NFS Shift.... that was easy, Followed by Underground 2. I'm not going to praise a game for how it played 15 years ago, but how it stacks up today. Thats why Goldeneye is the most overrated game ever made, It wasn't even the best Bond game. It felt good because we did not know better.

This coming from the guy who currently owns every NFS ever(except Undercover).

I'd go with Underground 2 as well, with Underground 1 and Hot Persuit 2 coming in a close second and third. Shift was quite good (better than the last few), but it wasn't as good as those. I would also say, however, that i'm not too fond of the first couple in the series (but that's coming from someone that hadn't played them until years after their original release).

I would agree this is this is better than my first one which is ProStreet. But I haven't tried out the other titles.

Undercover... by a long shot.

Seriously though, I think that Porsche 2000 was their most impressive game, but my all time favourite NFS would be High Stakes. I use to wake up every morning before sunrise to play it. 👍

I personally think High Stakes, and after that, HP2. Like people have said before, Shift had the capability but it was presented poorly.

My thoughts exactly.
I enjoyed a lot Road Challenge (High stakes on US), was a kid back then, but damn, but was the first time I fell in love with the Diablo!

Hot Persuit 2 for the PS2 was everything you could expect from a NFS game and more. The latest most exotic cars in the world, with mind blowing scenarios, with the cops right behind you!

Underground was fun, it would be a mistake if the NFS team didn't do a game based on Street Racing back then though.
Underground 2 was also fun, it improved the flass in the first one, and added more options for you to show off with your car.

But that was about it, there wasn't need for more street racing games made by NFS team.
Most Wanted would be a fantastic game, if didn't had the whole street racing thing going on.
I did so many face palms each time I saw a Gallardo or a SLR with body kits and weird vinyls, I mean...WTF? Those kind of cars are suppose to be as they are, no need to mess with their looks, they look beautiful already as they are.

And then they give us a sequel for Most Wanted, again, was fun, but no necessary.
ProStreet got my mind quit messed up, I mean...legal racing with...illegal racing atmosphere?
And then they go "Underground" again with Undercover, a game that I could never understand.

And now SHIFT; it has the potential to become a fresh new start for the NFS series...but it fails so hard to delivery everything that it says to be.
Is it a sim? not really.
An arcade? it sure doesn't feel like one...

Again, the "fashion" of the moment let the team got carried away.
With the effort from Forza to create an awesome game, and with everybody starving for GT5, they just took the chance.
Not bad in theory...but it would work so much better if they just made the game to get a bit closer to the sim aspects.

Do I talk too much? well nobody told me to stop lol :sly:

For me it has to be the original, I have the SE version its still great to play to this day. It had amazing point to point races that no one seems to ever be able to do today on console games. It also had in car view as well as cops, traffic and changing weather (as you go up a mountain for example). I wish they would remake it and put it out on PSN/Live with online racing. The second best for me was HP2, it had great graphics on PS2 and great tracks.

I also have III, Underground and MW but they never beat those other two.

Robin.

Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit. I cannot tell you how many hours of sheer fun I had playing that game on my PS3. As an aside the last REAL NFS game for me has to be Hot Pursuit 2 on the PS2. After that the series went downhill.

1000000 Invisible Plus Reps for first sentence in post quoted above!...

NFS:PU was pure epic win. Zone Industrielle in an old 911 Turbo..

Need For Speed III Hot Pursuit for PS1.

I remember it was the first racing game I had that gave me that great switch from digital to analog steering with the "Dual Analog Controller"s that were coming out. And built the foundation of many many fun years of split-screen racing with my brother.

Sadly thats all gone now.

I played 'em all, but I would have to say that I find NFSU1 and 2 (in that order) the best of the whole lot, with Shift coming in a close 3rd.

So how about a NFSU remake with the Shift engine?

Man tell me about it, and I absolutely LOVED the skid pad stuff where you have to do a 180, drive in reverse, do another 180 yada yada. To this day, that is one of the funnest (yet very challenging thing) for me to do in a racing game. The physics were phenomenal back then and I don't think are really outdated today. Plus the progression through all those Porsches.... If there is someone out there that would love to try a new racing game that is CHEAP and has depth, I would put my rep on the line (as if I had any :P) and say play it, its a 10.0 in my book.

Jerome

Right on!
Having all those Porsches right in front of you? it's amazing
You can experience the great story of Porsche cars.

I still have that game today, has a great soundtrack, and a selection of cars that would make Kazanuri jealous! XD
