Best NFS game ever?

Firstly, I've played High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed, Underground, Most Wanted and Carbon. I never did get a chance to play Shift although my brother really liked it the short time I rented it.

I would honestly have to say that Most Wanted was the best since it's a combination of what Need for Speed does best: Arcade Racers with audacious modifications and police chases with a mix of European, American and Japanese cars.

After that I'd go with Porsche Unleashed, then Underground, High Stakes and Carbon.

I agree with HBR-Roadhog in that EA either needs to make a kick-ass new Porsche Unleashed 2 or start to share the license with some other companies. (Strike a deal that PD can get some of the older Porsche's and race cars and tuners?) Let EA have the license for all the brand-spanking new Porsche's as well as concepts and super-cars.

Underground 1/2. I loved them, I wish they would revisit them. I had one of the old Hot Pursuits and Carbon and they just didn't compare for me.

Underground and the hot pursuits are my favorites. I like underground for the 2 player when one had to outrun the other to win. That was a cool feature with the distance meter.

Yeah the pickup races on UG2 were pretty cool they were also in Carbon if I remember correctly. Anyway other than Porsche Unleased I probably spent more time playing UG2 than any other in the series. One of the things I liked about UG2 is that you could take almost any car and make it to where it could compete with pretty much any other car.

Hot Pursuit II had some issues when it was released. Back then I used the chase view but in HP2 there was a bug that caused the car to appear a bit off the position on the track where it should be and made driving in that view very hard. They later patched this but by then I had already moved on to something else.

btw the PC version of HP2 also had a set of config files that altered performance and these were extremely easy to modify with something as simple as notepad. They were in the form of plain text ini files. By editing these files you could greatly increase power and grip on any car you wish. I played around with it a bit just to see how fast I could get one to go and stay on the track.

For me, it definately was N4S: High Stakes (a.k.a NFS 4), PSone version miles ahead of the pc version. I played the Psone one lol, by the standarts of back than, it was great, I especially loved you could drive in rain, during night, or a snowstorm, whatever you wish, besides I loved you could choose the native language of the police of the country you were driving in, so cool.

Played it like 8 months every day, it was my first 3D-game ever, oh the good old times.:(

I fully agree, High Stakes for the win, its not often a game can scare you...
In the sense the if you lost, you lost your car, and it wasn't cheap.

I enjoyed using the M3 or SLK 230 off the bat, and getting the three upgrades, making the rims pimp...

Also the night races, were gorgeous and the police had a personality for a game in 1999. Unlocking all the NFS III hot pursuit tracks was a plus as well.
Lastly, besides all the other great stuff, the PC version was one of the first games I believe with a huge following of car creater/track/modding that made the game last quite a bit of time.
💡..... :ouch: ah too bad it takes about a week for professionals to make a GT5 car, so it won't be so easy as it used to be.

ahhh.... the memories...

Hot Pursuit 2.

It introduced me to the bands Pulse Ultra, The Buzzhorn, Rush and Bush, which I'm thankful for and its gameplay was stellar on the PS2. When I got an Xbox, I got the Xbox version, to find it was made by a different studio and nowhere near as good.

I've just bought the new Hot Pursuit, but I know I'll probably be disappointed!

Second would be NFS4, which in the UK was known as Road Challenge. I had it on PSOne back in about 1999 and it was brilliant for that console's standards. The tracks were even better than the above, with a great German track and a peaceful New England coastal track sticking in my memory.

Third, definitely Underground 2. As it was just about at the peak of modding culture, it didn't feel like it had missed the boat and became a parody, and the customization was brilliant.

The best games in series are NFS 5 and Shift.

NFS 1-4 were decent racers, everything after NFS 5 except Shift is pure garbage.

I've only ever played the older games (all for PC): NFSII, NFSIII: Hot Pursuit, NFS High Stakes, NFS Porsche unleashed, and NFS Hot Pursiut 2. NFSII was actually the first racing game I ever played, and probably because I grew up with it, I have a big soft spot for it. I find it really fun even when an impartial review would find a lot lacking. :) I also really enjoyed NFSIII, even though I never touched the pursuit mode; the control of the cars (I hesitate to call it "physics") felt very natural to me and made it very enjoyable to play even outside of the main "point" of the game. High Stakes and Hot Pursuit 2, especially the former, just fell flat for me - I never really liked the feel of driving in those games, even if they did offer more interesting gameplay. Porsche Unleashed, as appears to be a popular opinion here, is probably still my favorite, as it continues to be quite fun to this day, and it's certainly more rewarding to drive with a somewhat realistic physics engine. It's funny to note that at least in the sense of making engine notes different between external and internal views, it's really more advanced than something like Forza 3 in terms of sound, as well.

My favorite NFS is NFS IV: High Stakes. Pretty much the original Hot Pursuit, but with damage and upgrades, plus a huge modding community. I miss those days greatly. I have to say that below that would be Underground II followed by Most Wanted. The final sequence in most wanted, out running every cop in the city, was absolutely the most exciting thing i've done with nfs in a long time.

TDU2? Seriously from the last trailer, I'm impressed with the more realistic behaviors of the cars, so finally a good successor to NFS1??

Open roads/multiple environments? Check
Fair realistic physics? Check
Realistic cops and Traffic? Check
Supercars duels? Check
Great Supercars brands in? Check (Porsche, Ferrari, Aston, Maserati, lamborghini...)
Little details like wind blowing the leafs? Check
Great sounds? Check
Superior graphics? Check
internal views? Check

Everything is ready for a fantastic NFS... ooops, Test Drive Unlimited 2

Having played all the "old" NFS games, I must say that the best i NFS:PU.
The fact that your car really suffered when you crashed was great. Also the point that you had to conserve your money for fixing the car. (yeah, I know you can buy/sell old cars to earn money)
After that the original itself is an icon. With great presentation of the cars by Road & Track mag. (still got the original box:) )
Next comes the first Hot Pursuit. This was great since I just had installed my new 3dfx card. Flashing red/blue lights in the dark was very impressive.
High Stakes/Road Challenge - and new cars made by other people. always nice to add som FBI cars to the scenery ;)

Being this old.. I must say that UG was bad, UG2 was better and MW was best of the new series.
Carbon/Pro Street/Undercover - I'm sorry to say they lost me there..
Hot Pursuit 2010 was utterly bad. And I thank myself for buying SHIFT instead for my ps3. Hopefully SHIFT2 will be even better.
