DVD recorders,capture devices etc?
I want good quality and I would rather have media files than DVD's.
I also don't want to spend too much money.:)

Make sure you have a good VCR with clean heads.
Get a USB composite video capture device.
Plug it into your PC and connect your VCR
Start the program and start the VHS

Yes that seems to be what I've seen on other forums.
I've seen a capture device called ezcap and was wondering if anyone thinks it's good.
Otherwise a hauppage PVR or dazzle PVR or a DVD recorder seems like the only options and expensive ones too.

I've got a hauppauge Colossus and a AVerMedia H727 both are brilliant capture devices. The H727 I mainly bought for tv capping and the colossus for game capping, but both are capable of doing what you want to do. As I was going to use them for the same thing.

When I got them they cost me H727 -105$ Colossus - 165$ (AUS $)
Note - Just checked prices now H727 - 99$ Colossus - 199$ (colossus not available at same shop anymore, so price is from another one I use)

I should have been more specific.
I'm going to do it using my laptop.
I would love a cheap DVD recorder from somewhere so I don't have to do compression, but has to be DVD-RW for re-use.
On the other hand a laptop TV might do the trick.
Decisions decisions.:D

I bought a cheap Hauppauge (Haup610) USB-Live-2 video device back in December just to get some old family videos from VHS to my desktop so I could create DVDs as Christmas gifts.

If you can find one from a local source it should be pretty cheap since it's an older device. Only has composite and s-video connections so you won't be recording from modern devices, but the price can't be beat if you only need to save some VHS recordings.

I've found one from play.com for 36 pounds.
Is it good?
I've heard devices like that have audio problems.

I read reviews as well where people said the audio didn't work at all but I haven't had any problems with the device (I trusted Hauppauge over some of the other cheap devices I saw online). The audio quality on old VHS home movies isn't great anyway, but it didn't come out sounding any worse after the transfers I did. The recording software provided was straightforward to use and the editing/dvd creation software was relatively simple but met my needs.

Thanks very much for the help!:):)
