Best way to teach GT4 to someone?

Hi to all GT lovers!!!

My name is Diego, and I'm talking from Sao Paulo, Brazil... I'm a huge fan of GT since I first saw the GT1 intro... I was just astonished with the quality of the cars, and the variety of them.... when we are used to nd4spd games with 50 maximum car options and crap handlings... well, a game with 166 cars or more and that MARVELOUS replays really shocked me... I'm a car lover, I read everything about cars everywhere I can... cars are my life... definitivelly... :)

Well, first... congratulations for this big and complete community, I found myself here for hours, reading and reading about your passion for GT...

Just one week ago I could buy myself a PS2 and a GT4... well... How could I live without it??? Man... it's epic... I was really disappointed with a lot of things in my life... and then I decided to sold my old PC and get a PS2... I was one of the best things I did... being a recent married guy, I was stuck with a lot of the beginning of life problems (wife, bids, costs, etc... some of you know...) and well, GT4 was an instant refreshener for me...

Sorry about being so long in my presentation... but, lets go to my problem...

My wife really loves gaming, but I'm trying to introduce her in the world of GT... I will really be very proud of her, if she learns to play GT4... That would be joy of joys, because you guys know how its hard to divide our lives when we are playing GT....

She doesnt know nothing right about cars... she has a driver license (real one) and she dont take the car for a spin much... he doesnt have much confidence...

Back to GT4... I bought her one nice Opel Corsa Comfort 1.4... give it some wheels (yellow car, yellow rims... man, she got some strange taste, but the result was some trackday like car...)

I put her to race in beginner course at driving park with some... er... -6 to -2 opponents... her driving is crap... she only did one 1st place beating the old beetle (in -6 level) with a 100hp car!!!! she loves the damn nitro button... but she doesnt know nothing about turn in and out and stuff...

After this long text, I ask you guys: Had you been in similar situation? How can I teach her???? What are recommended cars and tracks???

Thanks for the attention and sorry for some english errors...

Take care!

Diego R. (DRiFTER)👍

I suggest finding a car she likes. It seems you've done that.

Then, show her (without bragging or anything) how to do it on a simple track (Autumn ring mini comes to mind). Do it slowly, and set slow times she can match with good driving. Emphasize good driving over speed. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, at this point in the game.

when she can match those times, gradually increase the speed, and change up on tracks. I also suggest you get her to try the licenses, at LEAST up until she's got full bronze on the A license.

Play lots of two player, as the AI whooping her and frustrating her is not the way to start her off. Also realize that it may take weeks of her playing to get her to be "good". But as long as it's FUN, that doesn't matter.

I agree with what Tupac said. The best thing to do is find them a car that they like. Tune it up so any of the mistakes in the car are corrected, and just let them drive with you. Drive slow but emphasize what needs to be done to drive well. I taught my friend to drive in GT4 with a tuned beetle out of my garage. Its fast. Simple. And fun.

Personally I'd also remove the nitro from the car untill she can handle herself. :)

definately try some licences and be extremely patient

Good on her for giving it a go though and Welcome to the Planet

Use a wheel if possible. Give her a low-powered car and tell her to do laps around Tsukuba Circuit. Get her to beat a generous set time. Raise the bar.

It should make the Mini One on Tsukuba license test much easier. :D

It really takes a while before a beginner gets good at the game.

I thought my dad how to drive/race properly using GT4.

Using the DFP wheel, I first had a few trials to see which car suited him.

Finally settled on a low power - medium power 4WD cars such as Impreza WRX, and the 4WD Skyline with 220hp or so (don't remember the name). I also let him drive the Focus RS (FWD) and Integra TypeR. No MR cars for my dad. :dopey:

Anyway, I gave him like the Focus RS, that oval figure 8 track (motorland), 10 laps and AI on like -2. Then progressed up, AI on +2, then I took him to that Midfield track or whatever it's called (don't remember) with AI on 0. His "graduation test" was driving a certain laptime on Citta Di Aria with the Mercedes SL500 (R230). I considered giving him the AMG, but he woulda just spun it out. He had enough trouble with the SL500 (350hp-ish RWD).

One of the best things to do has already been mentioned but I feel it is the most important in the development of a driver - doing the license tests. Set up a save game file under her name, introduce her to the licenses, and see how she does. Progression in the licenses could be coupled with some driving mission attempts, and moving through some of the races in the Beginner Hall. Start her off slowly - there is no point in rushing ahead as she will not enjoy the game one bit.

I would suggest getting her a medium powered 4WD car (275hp-350hp) to start with and just let her play it's just a game she will get better the more she plays.

Absolutely mate. Though I would suggest (if possible) doing the licenses with her, commenting on how you need to run it, trying it without doing the tests for her. A few weeks ago I read someone on this forum say that the best way to start the game is to get silver in the first two licenses before doing a race. This is the way to go, though maybe silvers in the first and golds in the second could be a worthwhile compromise. The problem is showing people how fascinating a bloody license test can be.

So I would say stick with the licenses unless she threatens to quit, if so, buy some bodgy FF with 100-130hp that can win the Sunday Cup and get her to do it till she wins. I did precisely this with my partner's 9 y/o and he got it on the third go, jumping around and screaming with excitement when he won. I think it's the best way to teach them about lines and stuff, if they can't get it from the licences.

Good Luck

Low powered car, Sticky suspension and tires.

You can learn loads watching replays from the driver's view of the other cars.

Hi to all!!! Thanks for all the advices!

I will try some of these hints with her... She is a little bit angry with GT4 these days... That old little chat: "Ohhh you give more attention to this little black box than to me"...well, it will be hard... but, I told her that I've found some pink and rose cars and she liked... (ohhhh girls!)

One thing I've noticed, is that she wanted to help me getting more money... maybe sunday cup is the way to go?

We all say some bad things sometimes about GT4 excess of understeer in some cars... but I've noticed that this is really good for beginners!

Oh damn little Corsa... it will suffer... hehehe

I think they are using too little braking at the corners. Because cars do understeer in GT4 like in the real world, and because GT4 doesn't have much sence of speed.

Better start driving a little too slow than little too fast. I couldn't drive GT4 myself at first. I don't remember how long it took to realize these driving technicues...

And Logitech G25 or other great wheel helps a lot!
