Best way to test top speed of cars?

I would just drive in reverse on the Ring for the straight but the dang wrong way alert goes off for 5 seconds and race over

I don't wanna drive the ring all the way through just to test the top speed...any ideas?

One of the part versions of the ring starts on the straight. It's called Aremberg. It starts part way down the straight though.

The straight (on the ring) ain't long enough IMO to test the top speed of a car.
This is why we need a track editor in GT5 to generate a 5 mile long straight, (like VW have in Germany)

Can I ask what the point is in having a straight longer than any circuit in the game to test your top speed? As you'll never hit it outside of that circuit's straight.

Very true, ideally you should just about hit the rev limiter in top gear on a straight before breaking into turn 1.

But it would be good to test top speed of a car off the track, just for the fun factor

Amen to that track.. It's called Ehra Lessien (6 miles of straight godness!)
