BESTuners BMW M5 ’05 Report:

Deep Forest Raceway Time: 1’09.984

Intro

The ’05 BMW M5 is a gorgeous car. I personally prefer the pre 04 models myself. But, as I drove the ’05 I began to accept it’s styling more. Naturally, I chose this vehicle, since I really have a passion for mid sized luxury cars. Especially, ones that can move out of their own way. And, the ’05 M5 can certainly do that. Stock, it weighs 1,715kg/3,780lbs. So, getting that weight up to speed is going to require some power. You get 508HP from the factory, but we all know, there can never be enough HP. That’s where the work begins….

The Good..

At first you would think that such a heavy, long, 4 door sedan wouldn’t do too much performance wise. Once fitted with the performance parts the M5 goes through a transformation. Stiffer springs and stabilizer bars make body roll(an expected behavior from a luxury car) virtually nonexistent. For some, it may be too stiff. Uneven road surfaces can cause the rear end to get squirrely at speed. Personally, I think it adds to the “fun factor” of this car. The handling is impressive. A little too hot coming into a corner and it’s going to push. Not a problem. A slight tap on the brakes and you’re back in line. Very little input is needed from the gas and brakes to get this car going where you want it. Always remember, “Smooth is fast.” Erratic or 100% braking can really upset the suspension. Smooth, subtle input from the driver will yield a very enjoyable driving experience. One of the most impressive things I noticed is the way the car behaved coming out of a turn. Give it gas and it would turn. Push harder and…..It would turn more. It likes to turn with the accelerator. With a slight ASM set for over steer you won’t have to worry about spinning out while doing this. Now, the Power. There’s plenty of it. 761 HP to be exact. This is not just a 4 door freeway cruiser anymore. No matter where you are in the RPM range there’s power waiting to be unleashed. Oh, and with the 7 speed transmission 200mph is no problem for this beast. 0-400M is done in 10.36 seconds.

The Bad..

As I said before, at speed, it starts to get scary. Get into some bumps over 100mph and you’re at the mercy of the tires. I found myself picking grass out of my teeth after topping a few jumps on Nurburgring. Yet, on other occasions it would clear the jump, even with all the jittery stuff going on in the rear. Remember where imperfections are on the tracks and you’ll be fine. A little too much speed coming in or carrying too much out and the car will really push to the outside. Brakes will help but only too a certain extent. Too much braking will only worsen the problem. Weight would be another downfall of this car to some people. I can accept it since it is a 4 door luxury car. But, we all know, this amount of power in something lighter would be awesome.

Verdict

Want a 4 door luxury car in your collection that doesn’t drive like a 4 door luxury car? This is it. The weight of the BMW M5 is no longer a factor. The HP increase and suspension mods make this feel more like a sports car. Even in it’s stock form, it’s an impressive car. Naturally, modifying it would just make things better. As I said before, once you’re moving at a high rate of speed things get a little crazy. This is due to the fact that I didn’t add a wing. I just couldn’t bring myself to put a wing on such a nice looking vehicle. With a wing I’m sure there would be much more high speed stability.

Good votes people...It's almost Tied 3-2. Yes being the winner, hey Identti and RUFrturbo, what don't you like about the report?

Yes, there can be comments now.

I like most of the report, but it dosen't seem to stand out, and there's very little passion. Also small things like having the black bar on the thumbs, and the photos could do with a little more photshopping made me think that this review is not quite there. It is very close though. I like the idea of posting the total cost.

...Dude, the black bar doesn't mean anything, he didn't know how to remove them, but he knows how now. And so what if his pics weren't PSed, it still a good report.

good report, it was, and i enjoyed the pics a good bit, photoshopping would have been nice, but he did try hard to make the team, that was very evident, i voted yes because i can see that his report is in depth enough to enjoy and that he is a qualified tuner, he set that car up great for the ring, though some great quips here and there in the report and maybe more detail about the things that caused the car to behave the way it did, but he did include that though, and one more thing made me vote yes for this, see that drift shot down there, yeah.

Sorry to sound so negitive - very bad few weeks. Hell of a lot of work, and barely a moments free time. Reading the review again, i have changed my mind and think it is worthy of BESTuners and is up to the current standard. I was just harsh because it wasn't perfect. And now i have tested the 'ring setup, i found it to be great.

Is there any way i can change my vote on the poll? If not remember the postive votes should be +1 and the negs -1.

Not an easy car to tune, so a big 👍 for that alone.

Despite the lack of PS the pictures still look good and getting rid of the black bar would help and can easily be done.

My vote is a big fat yes.

Regards

Scaff

Heh, I thought the pics were PSed! Very good pics, especially since they were untouched!

The review is great, I like the fact that it goes in-depth. 👍

The only real negative is the black bars under the photos, but that can easily be changed.

👍

I voted for yes as this is clearly a good review, but one thing keeps bugging me.

I don't know who you are Mr. or Ms. Reviewer, but please don't hate me for what I say. The text could flow a little better, try using commas instead of full stops every now and then and you'll see your text getting a new life. 👍 No hard feelings. :)

It will be interesting to see who I just criticized...

yeah, the suspense is killing me, wait, i already know. Well damn. Dont worry, i didn't know until after i voted, Ekmatt is a real team player not telling the team whose report it was. ;)

^^ I agree too. Very nice review who ever did it  I KNOW WHO!!! So does .Duck., 440cuda9sec, and myself ;) ohh, and that person who did it haha. I guess we got a new member ;)

Nice review, great pics (no ps'ing necessary), but i feel that the report was too technical and not that passionate. Still, a good addition to the BESTuners team.
