Bluetooth on PS3

I wanted to get a bluetooth headset for voice comms, but how can I check that Bluetooth is functioning properly on my PS3 before buying one? I've gone into Accessory settings and started a scan for bluetooth devices, but despite having my Sony Xperia phone (bluetooth on and visible) it doesn't find it. Would that be normal (PS3 only sees certain types of device?) or might it indicate that there's a problem with bluetooth connectivity on my console?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Understood - but when I put the PS3 into scanning mode to find any nearby bluetooth devices, so I can pair the console with something, it doesn't detect my nearby phone even though the phone has bluetooth turned on, and is set to be visible to unpaired devices - I was expecting the ps3 to detect my phone, even if it couldn't pair with it because it might be the "wrong" kind of device. Hence I'm wondering if my ps3 has a bluetooth fault, and if that's the case I don't want to spend money on a bluetooth headset you see. Maybe someone who has a working bluetooth headset and a phone could do a scan to see if their ps3 can detect the phone?

Ok thanks, so my ps3 not finding my phone, and my phone not finding my ps3, is normal and doesn't indicate anything wrong :-)

Another way you can check Bluetooth is working on your PS3 before buying a headset is download the YouTube app.

It allows you to pair with the YouTube app on a phone and 'push' videos to the TV. That way you will know its working.

Not really quite true. I don't have Bluetooth turned on my phone and yet I can still watch videos though a basic network given I am logged on both.

Oh - so the YouTube app might be using the home Internet router to pass information between my phone (on wifi) and my ps3 (via ethernet cable)? Have I understood correctly @TJ13?
