The BMW 2002 is possibly the most well known version of the BMW 02 Series, mostly due to the 1973 2002 Turbo, with the 2002Ti winning the N24H in 1970 and many rallies and hill climbs over the years but one 2002 that is not so well known is the ultra-rare 2002 GT4.

The car was based on the BMW 2002 and while it used some parts from other cars such as turns signals from a 2800 CS, interior from a 2002 and tail lights from an Alfa 1750 Berlina, almost everything else on the car was specifically built for this car.

The car was longer, wider and lower than the 2002 and was unveiled at the 1969 Paris Motor Salon. The car featured a glassed rear hatchback design and 4 seats (Hence the designation "GT4"). The interior was lifted from the BMW 2500 (E3).

The car was powered by a 2.0 carburetted Inline 6 producing 120HP @ 5,500RPM. The car featured disc brakes up front and drum brakes at the rear paired with Campagnolo rims with rear independent suspension. While there were high hopes for this coupe version of the 2002, it never made it into production and only 2 prototypes were built.

Good cruise machine. More classic than the 2002 will ever be.

By the way, what is the name of the yellow BMW above? I can't identify it.

Frau did a few design studies for BMW based along similar lines at the time, cars like the 2000GTI, 2000Ti Coupe, 2800/3.0 GTS Coupe as well as the 2002 GT4. Most were variations on a theme and tended to share most of their styling with cars that Frau was doing for other manufacturers.. in other words, he'd just slap a different grille on it depending on who was interested. They're good looking cars, but they tend to look more like Frau's than BMW's, if you know what I mean.
