Well basically since I'm Pakistani, I know Bollywood more than Hollywood. But what do you Non-Pakis find interesting in Bollywood that's not in Hollywood? (Not including that we put in a song in the movie like every 5 minutes  )

Asian girls.

Although I have to ask something that's bugged me for a long time. Are most Bollywood films/Indian TV shows in Hindi and if so how do Pakistanis/Bengalis understand them?

I've only seen a few scenes from bollywood films but one thing that has stood out to me was the incessant need to make everything seem way more dramatic than it actually is, be it with special effects, slow motion, zoom ins, stingers in the music, etc. even during dialogue. Probably to cover up the fact that the plot itself is not super interesting on its own. (Some real Hollywood films are guilty of this too, and some TV shows)

That said, that sort of thing is almost entertaining in itself. It feels almost like a parody of itself, though keep in mind this is based on a few scenes that people post often, which probably represent the most ridiculous of the films.

If I had to give advice to the producers, it would be to understand the importance of silence and pause in a movie, especially when trying to create tension.

Of course, it's possible there's some real gems. If you think you know some, I'd like to watch them. I'm on a movie kick right now so I could probably find time.

My experience in India was a lot of media had multiple audio tracks and subtitle options. Not as certain how it worked in theaters as I was only in an Indian theater once. The language was Hindi from what I recall, despite being in a Punjabi speaking area.

You have to keep in mind that even in India that only about half the population even speaks Hindi.

Also, the dance and song scenes are integral that Bollywood certainly has its own thing going on.

Love Bollywood, Om Shanti Om is a classic :D

The proper title is "Hindi Film Cinema" so the films are naturally in Hindi. It's the fourth-most spoken language in the world so there's no shortage of understanding viewers in the native cuts. About 120 million people live in Bollywood's home state, there are a further 200 million in Uttar Pradesh where the state language is also Hindi. That's not to say that all Uttar Pradeshians speak Hindi but, as mentioned earlier, Bollywood cuts normally have soundtracks in other Indian languages.

...As a self-confessed film lover I watched a few Bollywood movies, but gotta say, a lot of them lacked substance and way too much focus is given to song-and-dance numbers, "sensuous" scenery, exotic locale and impossibly good looking leads. And most of them are too bloated in their running time too.

There were two Indian films I heartily recommend: One is Baghban and the other Lagaan. And surprise surprise, these two have absolute minimum of dance numbers, leads aren't the most attractive, and both films focus more on character development and story telling then trying to sell OST CDs.

Is it any wonder both films are also two of the highest grossing films in Indian cinema history?

Well, the Hindi and Urdu language are basically the same. So we know what we're saying but if we write it to each other then who the hell knows what we write

My ex is from Trinidad by way of India and her Mom was a Hindu and loved watching Bollywood movies and it got me interested. I like the positive vibes you find in most movies, the singing, the dancing, reminds me of Hollywood musicals back when everyone could sing and dance. Plus Bollywood has this:eek::eek::eek::

First saw Aishwarya Rai in Bride and Prejudice and was simply in awe of her beauty and talent. What a wonderful movie too, so much fun and so entertaining, especially if you like comedy and singing and dancing!

As an American-born Indian, I usually prefer Hollywood movies, but nonetheless I enjoy Bollywood. One thing I definitely like in Bollywood is the length of the movies. Hollywood movies are usually only 1:30 to 2 hrs, but a lot of Bollywood movies are near 3 hours. I think this lets them expand the story making it more interesting.

I don't get it? And why can't you answer the question... why did you direct your opening question to American members only?
It wasn't meant to be like that, I mostly direct most of my posts to Americans since I know them more but I forget GTP is less American than any other site
I changed to Non-Pakistanis

But Bollywood isn't in Pakistan, it's in India... why would you exclude Pakistanis? Keep digging... ;)

Don't want to sound rude but why name it Bollywood in the first place if your goal was to create something unique?
Just because of the name it's like wearing "Versaccia" glasses and pretend people not thinking you are wearing a unofficial version of "Versace" glasses.

When I think of Bollywood, I think of 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...'.

You'll probably like 'Taal' then if you haven't watched it already...

...Just a thought, but shouldn't this thread be in...oh you know, "Movies & TV" forum? Just asking.

They didn't, they named it Hindu Film Cinema. The more common portmanteau was inspired by Tollywood which was clearly named deliberately after Hollywood.

I made it more opinion based, but if it goes like this then I'll ask one of the mods to move it ;)

I wonder if I'm the only one that see the irony in people objecting to you directing your original OP to Americans but no one seems to care that you reworded it to "non-pakis"

I don't get it either

Just in case you are not aware, it is an ethnic slur. If you are getting called that, then someone is likely being racist to you.

Also believe it or not, likely most people in Bollywood are non-Pakistanis unless you want to be like this guy:
