A bomb has exploded in front of a school in the southern Italian city of Brindisi killing at least one girl and injuring six others.
The blast went off as students were arriving at the Francesca Morvillo Falcone vocational school at around 07:45 (05:45 GMT).

Although no-one has said they planted the device, the city's mayor has blamed local mafia.

Police are at the scene investigating the blast scene.

Reports say the explosive device had been placed in a rubbish container outside the school. It is unclear if one or two devices exploded, but one account suggests that the explosives had been in bags.

"Given the effect of the explosion, it appears that this was something quite powerful," an official from Italy's Civil Protection Authority said.

The mayor of Brindisi, Mimmo Consales, has blamed the local mafia network for what he calls "an unprecedented attack".

It's moment like this I envy America and their death penalty.

I had heard they strapped it to gas canisters in the school. Awful attack.

Our politicians are too corrupted, even if these mafious get arrested nothin will change. They'll be out of jail some years before the end of the penalty. We need police and/or army to go out and kill them this is what we need.

Stupid country.

I heard about this on twitter a couple of hours ago. The latest news is that another girl has sadly passed away.
This is terrible news, and my thoughts are with the family & friends of those effected.

I don't understand, Italy comes across as being such a peaceful place.

And yet, in the south, the mafia is still terrorizing the people. Italy should put martial law into action, deploy the army and get rid of them, for good.

That's not only a matter in southern Italy, it is spreading throughout the north.
Lots of people may say that it resides in the government, too.
Italy could be the best place to live ever, but problems cannot be solved easily. There's no organization. And if politicians organize something, they do everything against their own people, it seems they're there to take advantages for themselves only.
The possibilities to change and to improve the situation are everywhere, but they do not have the will to do it. They only want to improve the situation of their status and, of course, of their wallets.
Italy has got the most payed politicians in Europe. The question is: why do they earn so much, if they are not working properly? Why aren't they going home, if they cannot solve problems?
There's also the problem of choosing politicians. It seems that in Italy nobody feels he's represented by any politician.

It seems peaceful, indeed, because it's a nation of lazy people.
That's the reason why the main shows on Italian tv are horrible reality shows, they want you only to think about gossip, your couple life, sex and so on.
The tv news will never let you understand how the world is actually working.
The government want them to be lazy and stupid, in order to govern them easily and stitch them up with over-taxes. It's very easy to rule ignorant people.
They even tried (twice) to establish a law for the payment of a tax on pet posessions (cats and dogs). They said it's a good way to improve the situation of alley animals. Like if Italians are not paying already too much.
Fortunately, they didn't make it (so far).

At least the got rid of playboy president Berlusconi!

Italy remains with his heritage... Especially the mass media. Did you know that the main group of tv chains are just Berlusconi's?
Unfortunately, Monti is not deserving everybody's approvals... They say he's the man of taxes, he tells Italian people to make efforts, to save up, and at the same time he's one of the richest government employees.
Thanks to him, Italy could have a better reputation in the world, but on the other hand Italy is getting poorer and poorer.

Ya don't say, local authorities are blaming the Mafia for this so they can put more controls on the population with the excuse of attacking organized crime.

If every Mafia movie I've ever seen is actually representative of them, I'd say the Mafia doesn't attack people who don't have it coming, especially innocent children.

Obviously that's Hollywood-based speculation. Anybody from Italy care to elaborate on how the mafia actually works?

I thought the Mafia were above harming civilians not in their wars?

In any case, the scum that is the Mafia needs to get dealt with like they are terror organizations.

Sometimes I wished the CIA and Navy Seals would go out and stomp crime like the GI JOEs.

Though I have to say, this doesn't really sound like Mafiosi.

This sounds more of anarchist/terrorists running wild.

In some vintage films mafia may have a sort of "code" "not kill this kind of people" but it's not a rule. Basically nowdays mafia are just a bunch of a**holes trying to make money in every illegal way and trying to rule their local city. You can't be sure of what they will or will not do. I've heard these schoolers received an award for good actions, they were against illegalty. So I kind of understand why they organized this s***.

Here in Italy there's not only 1 mafia we have at least 5 mafias: cosa nostra, sidda, camorra, andrangheta, corona unita etc..
Problem is they don't operate alone they have regular deals with "loggia massonica p2" (lodge, freemasonry) which is a secret (not so secret) group including the richest people of the right wing, bankers and the vatican. They are all implicated togheteher.

A good amount of the lodge is in the politicial party PDL of berlusconi and his s**tty corrupted group.

And vatican, they troll people with religion, behind the papa (which is not guilty, he is just a symbol) there is probably one of the biggest criminal organizations in the World. Many managers of pubblic administrations, are ruled by cardinals and bishops. They take political decisions, they move money, they own banks, and they are the mind behind many mafia murders here.

Go a little bit north of you and find out (Warren/Youngstown).
Mafia doesn't hurt kids they wait till their kids fall for the wrong members then take them out.

What is it with people feeling the urge to harm school children? I whole heartedly beleive in the eye for an eye thing. Kill someone, be killed. That simple. If it can be proven to be an accident, then he should be let free.

Teaching them to fear for their lives and depend on government protection from a young age is probably the best way to make sure they listen to you when they're adults. Highly recommended method for brainwashing an entire society into submitting to authority.
