I'm using a Windows 8 laptop with UEFI and I'm wondering how I can boot from USB. When the laptop boots, there's no clear indication on how/if I can select a boot device other than the hard drive. I'm not sure whether secure boot is enabled, or if it has secure boot at all. Creating a UEFI compatible USB boot device is not a problem (I know how to do that), but I'm not sure how to actually select the device.

If it matters, it'll be a Linux boot drive.

Depending on the brand of laptop you will need to go into the BIOS/UEFI
Then you will need to go to security and Disable Secure Boot then you need to go to the Boot menu and enable Legacy Boot/Boot CSM.
Save Changes and tap the boot selection screen and select the USB device.

It should be able to boot no matter if the drive is UEFI or not

When in windows you can select to restart into advanced boot options, this will then give you the option to boot from USB with UEFI on but it will only boot Microsoft certified images.

What you want to do for Linux is find out which hardware function key will bring up your machines bios and from there you will have to enable legacy boot. Then you can 'press any key to boot from USB'.
