Brand new copy of GT4 not working

Well hi, GTP people. I ran across your forum by none other than the Veyron/Ralph Lauren sighting. So I figure that I would go ahead and ask you all what you think of my little situation. I have gone through 3 copies of GT4 in the past...well, since whenever it came out. I'm currently on my 3rd brand new copy. It's ridiculous! My PS2 just makes a "click click click" sound when I put the disc in the slot. The crazy thing is, every other game works! I only use my PS2 for driving games and have the Logitech Driving Force Pro racing wheel--Talk about AWESOME! I'll make a video of the sound either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
CJ

I have/had the exact same problem, I always found that 2 slight (not too slight) hits of the Ps2 stops the weird noise & it works perfectly,
This does leave you with slight scratching of the CD & eventually that because rather hefty scratches but still.
I dont suggest trying that unless it..
a) Pisses you off when it doesnt work..
b) Nothing else works..
c) Only try if its an old PS2 (the big ones)

Everyones favourite solution to something that doesnt work.. Hit it :sly:

Which PS2 do you have?
I have an old style (with the disc tray that slides out) and a Slimline (Top opens like a PSone).
The old one will categorically not load GT4 at all, ever.
The slimline will load only if the disc and laser are both clean.

If the disc is dirty or smudged with a fingerprint, it will not load.
If the laser is dirty, it will not load.

Take a Q-tip, dip one end in rubbing alcohol and GENTLY clean the lens of the laser. Then GENTLY dry it with the other side, or let it air dry.
Then try to load your disc.

My first slimline quit playing dual layers, and that became apparent RIGHT when I got GT4... Clickclick... Clickclick... and if you open the tray up, the disc wound up not being spun past about 20-30rpm. So I'd open it and close it over and over, and it would start working. 5% of the time.

Got a new one, no problems to speak of with it *knock on wood*, only 130 bucks! (And not my money!)

I have the fat PS2, and its happened before. Turn on Diagnosis from the PS2's Main Menu (where it says Browser and System Config.) Press Options, go to the top option, press the button for options, and turn on diagnosis. Then stand your PS2 vertically.

All reports I've read on both models suggest that for the longevity of the machine it should not be used vertically.

I had problems with my Slimline for a bit there. Which allowed me to go back and appreciate some other games.
However, I got desparate and cleaned the lens of the laser and its worked well ever since.
To clean the laser in an older model, you have to open the machine. By now it's old enough that the warranty is gone, so go to one of the many sites that detail how to do it safely. Give the machine a thorough interior cleaning. (It will be very dirty in there!!) and it should run the disc.

I don't agree with longevity problems using it vertically. I've had mine since 2000, vertically, and used it a ton and mine plays GT4 and every other game flawlessly. I had the drive replaced in the first year under warranty (wouldn't play the blue-bottom games) and since then it's been perfect.

My PS2 (old one) had this problem off and on and I would just pop the tray out and reload it. It would eventually work.

Then one day my cat jumped on it and it fell over and landed on my subwoofer about 6 inches down, wo it was kind of leaning against teh cabinet it was sitting on. After that it clicks all teh time, but it loads all the time too.

Go figure.

So if you have a cat......

I had the same problem a couple weeks ago. There's a simple solution, which I think someone already mentioned in this thread. Over a long period of time a thin layer of film develops over the laser making it harder to read discs. Just crack open (not literally) your PS2 and take something (I used Kleenex and spit, but I don't recommend it) and gently wipe the laser. You'll probably see some dirt or something rub off, and your PS2 should work fine again. But be warned, when opening your PS2, keep track of what screws go where, because there are different sizes, and pull the cover off SLOWLY so you don't rip the thin wire going to the reset/ eject buttons.

Good luck! :)

I got it working again! I did this last night and got it working. I took my PS2(the old fat one) apart and blew all of the dust out and then wiped the laser down with a q-tip and SHAZAM, it works. My fastest car currently is my Cien, but I have an M5, an SL65 AMG, a DB9, an A3, a Pikes Peak Quattro, a 'Speed6, and a couple of other things. Oh, and an Accord coupe.
