As far as I can work out from various sources:
The network was attacked on Wednesday night with multiple waves of DDoS and some Administrator accounts were compromised. This could potentially have allowed intruders to access our credit card info (which is encrypted, so no immediate panic) and our usernames/passwords (not so encrypted so more of a risk). Thus Sony did a panic shutdown of the entire network.
They then realized that before they could open it again they would have to implement some better security system which entails rebuilding the entire thing from backups, thus the long wait.
Prognosis (Sony's own, so I'm not holding my breath) is today in Japan and tomorrow for the rest if us.
Consequence? As soon as it's back up, it gets attacked again so the attackers can test their cyber muscles against Sony's cyber 'finger'.
I'm afraid Bob might be in cyberspace for the long haul.
Sony is the one who can help you, noone else, and you don't email a warning about a panic shutdown
