Buying a New Computer Tommorrow......

Ok. tommorrow is No tax weekend and I have $1000 credit at Best buy, so I figured now is the perfect time for a new computer and no more factory 2001 SONY VAIO POS......This one I've got now has 128mb RDRam, 32mb GeForce 2 MX/400, 1.5ghz Pentium 4 processor, 60mb hard drive.

The one I'm thinking of buying is 1,000x better than that.

It's a Gateway:

2.4ghz AMD Athlon 64 Processor
1024mb PC3200 DDR Ram upgradable to 4gb
128mb GeForce 6100
nForce 410 MCA
200mb hard drive
17" LCD Flat Panel Wide Screen Monitor

It's $790

So what do you guys think. That an upgrade or what??

Also I dunno much about Gateway, They good??

It depends what his opinion on Windows is, and what he'll use it for. From the specs he listed, it looks like a gaming PC, which, Macs don't have the best gaming capabilities (though there are some plans to bring a lot more titles over in the near future). If he likes Windows XP, he shouldn't get a Mac. If he hates it, however, he should buy one immediately.

LOL, What's so great about an apple??

And WTF is so wrong with Windows that made you hate it so much??

And I don't think apple's are so great for sim gaming either.........The reason I'm getting this is to play NR2003, GTR, and LFS.

+ I plan on sticking a NVida GeForce 6600 GT in it as soon as I get it.

Try, TRY, TRY to get a computer with a Core 2 Duo (Conroe). You wont regret it if you do. They are by far an away the best CPUs on the market today for a good price.

Well if you want to play games you're going to have to do better than ever the 6600GT these days, but aside from that (and the 200mb HDD) it looks ok. I'm sure you can do better for that money though.

Sounds like a good price for something with 1 GB RAM, 200 GB HDD and a widescreen monitor included. But before purchasing anything I usually look for user reviews of the product online. What exact model is it? You can get a pretty good idea of the product quality from others' reviews.

Well, it depends on what you use your computer for. If you are into gaming, than go with a PC. If you like web developing and music recording, go with a Mac. If you like something open source with loads of stuff you can do to it, go with either a Mac or PC and run Linux.

Since you like gaming, it's logical to go with a Win PC, because there are more games and game equipment for it. I like artsy kinda stuff, and the open-source scene, so I go with a Mac running Linux.

edit: Ah, I totally misinterpreted you. Still, are you saying that you should only buy a Mac Mini, and not any other type of Macintosh? They're cheap but pretty low spec, aren't they?

It's not just Windows vs. Macintosh anyway. You could build yourself a good quality machine and put Linux on it if you wanted. Probably work out a good deal cheaper than the equivalent Mac.

Save some cash up, and get the Core 2 Duo in you're next PC. Also get some more cash saved up for a better graphics card, if you're planning to play games on you're next PC.

I think he means any complete computer that comes with a monitor is ripping you off. It's usually best to buy a box if you're not building it yourself and buy a monitor seperate. For example when you see ads that say 'Upgrade to a 17" LCD for 200$' but you know a place where you can get a 17" LCD for 150$...
