I want some of your opinions on which would be the best deal (style, mileage, room, cargo space, etc. wise)

I need to get something big for the family, so I'm looking into getting an SUV. (yes I want to support terrorist)

But there are so many out right now, maybe you all can help me out. Somewhere in the year range of 02-03 and would prefer it not to be more than $25k.

A two to three year old Explorer or Blazer with low mileage would probably meet your requirements.
If you don't care what country the thing is from, I would also recommend an Isuzu Trooper or Rodeo. Another possibilty is the Mitsubishi SUV.
The Kia is not terribly expensive even BRAND NEW, but I think the Kias are perfect examples of brand new mid 1980's technology.

I'd say stay away from the Mitsu Montero, it flips really easily.

Check out the Toyota Highlander or 4 Runner. You could go with the Tribute if you want to, because the Toyotas are probably gonna be over $25K.

I was looking into a '00 4runner they had for $22,479. I took it for a test drive and didn't like the steering set up on it at all, I don't know if it was just that one, or if all 4Runners are like that. But the turning on this one was horrible.

The Rodeo is kinda small, I'm looking for something a lil bigger. I checked out the new blazers and liked them, but the car is not for me, so it's up to the wife to decide. I'm just trying to find out which are the best\most reliable.

Thanks for the input.

Whatever you do, when you register it, purchase the 'Protect Wild Dolphins' license plate.

The Rodeo sucks, don't get it. My mother's had one for ten years, and it's nothing today compared to the Explorer and Blazer of the same age. My recommendation is a nearly new (perhaps Enterprise rental return) Grand Cherokee Laredo. You could find a 2001 or 2002 for $25k.

The only SUV I'd even consider owning would be a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The jeep grand cherokees are too small though, its just a downgraded version of the lexus suv. I have a date tomorrow to check out a 4Runner and we'll see how things go.

You guys must be pissed off you dont have access to the Nissan Patrol. This thing is a serious off roader and it would only loose to the new Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne off the road.

For $80k I would rather go with the Cayenne, looks better in my opinion.

This one looks like one of those old old jeeps, I forget the name of it.

It's alright, little to much for me though.

I won't argue size, but the 5.9 Grand Cherokee would tow the Lexus "SUV" backwards like a boat. The GC also passed the real Rubicon Trail test, which would have caused the Lexus to faint with fear.

I'll admit I do not like SUVs but the only reason I would ever want one is for rough duty - hence my point that the only one I'd ever own is a Jeep.

If you want size, check out a Durango.

i would suggest something else. a minivan or wagon. i know you probably wouldnt consider something else, but hey its worth a try.

a minivan should be able to carry the same number of people as an SUV with more space for each person. my experience in many suvs has shown me that by trying to fit room for 6 along with cargo room, there isnt much legroom. this includes the jeep gc and lexus lx450, maybe others are different. in a minivan i think you should be able to move seats or somthing to fit more "stuff" in the back.

If you want a softcore offroader, I prefer the Honda Pilot, CR-V, and the Element.

But, if you want a hardcore, I'll take the 4Runner, Xterra, Pathfinder, or the Trooper.

I don't know why he thinks the Grand Cherokee is a downgraded RX300 (because that makes absolutely no sense) but he's right -- the Grand Cherokee is just 180 inches long (deceptively short) which is much shorter than SUV's supposedly in its class.

For the price range of a new Cherokee thats still under at least 3 yr warranty I could get a new Explorer with only a couple hundred miles on it. But tomorrow I am going to check out a 4Runner and a Durango, if she doesn't like them, we are getting a muscle car :mischievous:

Surely, though, this has to be the Crown Prince of Ugly...

Get a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 for that money or 3500 if you have the money, very reliable and they have the biggest towing capacity. Plus they offer loads of power and load and loads of torqe. Voted 2003 Motor Trend Truck of the year and the 1500 was 2002 truck of the year. And IMO they look cool too. You could also get a Jeep Gran Cheereke (sp). It has a great engine as well. If you want good towing in an SUV get a Durango...

BTW, dont get a Suzuki. In 30 MPH tests they flipped over, very easily. KIA's are good other than they are built on a car frame and get stuck at times if you think of going off road. The new Mitsubishi's are great as well...

Well, we went today and took some test drives and bargained prices and we ended up buying one of those new Chevy's with the Real 4WD, the ones that all the tires turn, you know the one in the commercial lol. It's a very nice truck, we got it for $23k with 700miles on it.

I have always thought the JGC was one of the better looking SUV's and I thought they were good quality also. But after taking a trip in my friends parents JGC ('01) I was really baffled why anyone would buy a $60,000, 4,000+ lbs vehicle with the rear leg room of a 1986 Nissan Pulsar. NO normally proportioned person could sit in the backseat without having their knees jammed about 3 inches into the back of the front seat.

I thought it was big for more than just the reason to be a pain in the ass to drive?

wow, I'm suprised that you guys and girls. He wants something that 25k and under, but no one said the honda crv. i just did a price check and what i put on it the total came to 20k.
