So my roommate came up to me tonight and he wants me to buy a short term car insurance policy for his car since he can't get one until his car is inspected, but he can't get it inspected without insurance from what he tells me.

I want to know if...

Even though I have insurance on my car under my parents name, can I still buy insurance for his car, even though I'm not listen on the title for his car.

Will doing so, and getting the policy canceled after a month or two affect my rates adversely?

Will doing so affect my parent's car insurance rates?

Is this even legal to do so?

Do not and I repeat not buy HIS insurance. Even if it is legal. It's his responsibility. He should have thought of it before. It's called Adulthood.

I'm not paying for it, he's giving me the money for it, he just can't get insurance without having his car inspected, and he needs the insurance to get it inspected. I do use the car as well, but I didn't know it wasn't insured nor up to date on inspections until yesterday.

It sounds way too risky to me even if it's going to be very short term. There's always the chance that he could get into an accident, or someone could hit him, while he's still under your insurance which would obviously effect you and your family adversely.

Florida doesn't have inspection so I don't know about that, but this whole situation seems a bit silly. How does anyone buy a used vehicle that is passed the inspection date there if they can't put insurance on it for inspection, but can't insure it until after inspection.

There's no way such a catch-22 exists. Can't insure without inspection, can't inspect without insurance. You can't register or renew a tag without insurance, and if insurance is required at inspection, then inspection can't be required for insurance, unless you have to get a 30-day waiver or something like that.

The only other thing might be that he's let it lapse so he's in a bind that way.

Regardless, I don't see how you buying his insurance is any different than him buying it. His car is either inspected or not.

He's doing something else. Tell him it's his problem, he can deal with it.

DO NOT DO THIS. Money aside, it's your and your parents' claim history that is affected if something happens.

Besides, he's either mistaken of full of crap that the insurance company needs the car to be registered before they will insure it. There is no state in the US that will register a car without insurance, so his insurance company cannot expect that to happen. And if your insurance company would insure it, why won't his?

My bet says that his insurance company wants more than he can afford/wants to pay since he has no history and he's a young male. He's hoping that he can get a discount from piggybacking on an existing policy.

You have nothing to gain and quite a lot to lose from getting involved in this.
