cant open text files with notepad wtf

i am running winxp

when i right click on a text document in properties it says "Opens with: unknown application" when i go to "change" and point it to notepad in c:/windows/system32/ it still wont open :confused: :banghead:

notepad works fine though

i have scanned my computer for viruses with norton and found nothing latest def ect ect..

Sounds as though some other program that you've later uninstalled, hijacked the extension.

Right-click on the text file, hover over 'Open With' and select 'Choose Program'. Click on Notepad and check the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' box. Click OK.

A program you might want to check into is Associate This, which will monitor your file extensions and block any attempts of other programs trying to hijack them.
 
Alternatively, open Explorer, then click Tools -> Folder Options, File Types. List by extension, then scoll down to TXT. Click Change, then scoll down through the list of programs until you see Notepad. Select it, then click OK, then OK again.
