Lightweight original for sure. I really did like the MkV when it came out, but I was in High School and had crap taste.

MK1. Simple, very boy-racer-esque style hot hatchback. I wouldn't mind owning one myself...

MKIII. Unlike later models it just took the original and made it better. MKV would be second

Well the MkII is 80s AS 🤬 and I've had a bit of fun on a mate's one, but the MkV is my favourite because of NFSMW and the Pimp Mein Auto tv ads.

German engineering in da haus, JA! We just dropped it like it's hot, Vee-DUB! Representing Deutschland!

Mk1 for looks, Mk2 for powertrain (16vs) and chassis. The Mk3 really depends on market, in the States the GTI was offered with the VR engine (which it was in Europe as well, but as a VR6 not a GTI). Also Mk4/5 for powertrain.. Mk2 with 20v or 2.0T yes please.

I voted for the Mk5. It was a significant improvement over its predecessor (Mk4) and captured the character of the original in a modern package.

MkI for sure, it's just a classic. The Mk4 has to be the worst, it was unreliable (at least mine was, my sister has it now and it's on motor #3) and it didn't look any different than a base Golf.

The Mk7 might be the most complete GTI since the Mk5, but for me, nothing beats the original Mk1. It brought hot hatches into the mainstream and made them practical alternatives to sports cars of the time.
