E39 for reasons already stated. Almost chose the E28, as the individual throttle are pretty wild to have on a normal street car, let alone a sedan.

@MatskiMonk What's your opinion?

For me the E28 will always be king. Closely followed by the E60, because looks and V10.

After that, the F10, E34 and E39 would all be pretty close. They've all got their pro's and con's to be honest. I don't get the love for the E39's looks, always seemed slightly bulbous to me. The F10's generation isn't quite as special for me either... 8 M-cars share basically the same engine, it's not a dealbreaker, but in the company of the other M5's it takes the sheen off. The E34 only really suffers because it followed the E28 - which will always be my favourite. In general, I feel the M5 has evolved from a steak knife into a sledgehammer.. I know which I'd prefer for carving up my local favourite roads. The E60 somehow managing to get some of the early magic back... the fact it's got sod all to do with BMW's presence in motorsport other than ... oh look F1 used V10 too, is maybe the only reason why it doesn't match the E28 for me.

Each to their own.

The G30 generation M5 is rumoured to offer AWD as well as RWD, things will never be the same again ;D

E60 because reasons.

WARNING:
Personal necdote nobody cares about ahead!

I've always liked cars, from my first words to my first toys and my first "life goals", but I remember that a particular magazine turned that liking into absolute obsession and passion: a Motor magazine featuring the E60 M5. It caught my imagination and my heart SO tight that, to this day, I have a specialy place in them for the E60 M5 and it's absurdely complicated V10 engine. I love it to bits, and that's my only reason. Nowadays, I understand the V10 engine in that car is...an ever increasing source of problems, to put it lightly. Today, I see that magazine and know it's complete and utter 🤬, it's a thinly veiled ad campaign printed in crappy paper and the chief editor is a :censored:ing idiot who's partially responsible for setting back motorsports in this country for decades (mind you, he's got a controlling influence in the country's only racetrack...and one of his sons died there because he drove into a :censored:ing lake in the middle of the track and drowned. Third world shenanigans!).

I've faced lots of heartbreak being a car nut...but the E60 M5 right here, that...that car reminds me why I am like I am. And for that, I have it on my dream garage.

E39, it's been one of my favorite cars since its release and one I'd really love to own at some point. I like the engine in the E60 but Chris Bangle didn't really make the outside terribly appealing.

My dad owned an E39 M5 for a while and it was real beast. I was lucky enough to drive it and give it a bit of a blast and it was quick for it's age and just felt so planted.

Personally this is the M5 I grew up with and the engine in it is probably one of the best sounding V8s I've ever heard.

The E28 and E34 models are now falling into the hands of the stance crowd, whilst I still appreciate them if left stock, they can be horribly modified.

The newer ones still haven't shaken off the rich tosser status yet, when the next M5 comes along it'll help the E60 shake it.

Soft spot for the styling of the E34. It's also the car involved in one of my favourite ever short features in a car magazine. Finally, there's just something about a BMW Motorsport inline-six that's cooler even than the V8 that followed.
