car with worst gearbox

for you, which car probably has the worst gearbox?? for me, it has to be the Dodge Challenger, because it can reach up to 3rd gear only, compared to other muscle cars which have a 4th gear. also, when you shift it into 3rd gear, the ratio is so wide that it will really miss the powerband. in other words, when you shift the Challenger into 3rd gear on an uphill slope, you will slow down instead of speeding up..,

how about for you?? which car do you think has the worst gearbox??

Well, yes, Challenger's gearbox is really retarded, but I think the problem is 2nd gear, which is too short, not 3rd too long =)

That's how the Plymouth GTX is too: first gear is okay....2nd gear is WAAAY short! You go from like 50 mph to 67 and then you're forced to shift! And then 3rd gear is extremely tall....if they weren't using a hemi with massive torque, the GTX wouldn't pull at all!

In general, almost all the '60s muscle cars have short-throw transmissions...that's because back in their day, the quarter-mile was everything. So when you take many of them to the Test Track..they'll stomp that quarter, but often run out of room by the time they're zooming towards 1000 meters!!

For more modern cars in GT2, I'd have to vote on the Shelby Series 1. Even with a semi-racing gearbox (which you think would be short) the Series 1 packs gears that are way too tall..you never need 5th or 6th gear. :grumpy:

For Kei cars: check out the Honda Z Turbo. Again...gears that are way too tall for such wimpy power. What were they thinking? The Honda Z is a miniature RV basically...do people actually take it out in the mud with this tall gearing??

Just like Vector W8 Twin Turbo, with only 3 gear it can do 95mph at first gear, 170mph at second. We don't even need third gear on many track .

Apparently, the Dodge Avenger has a terrible gearbox...

The Jaguar XJ220, like all Jaguars in the game (except possibly the XJR15), have very tall gearing that diminishes acceleration greatly by missing the powerband, as some of you had said. The Aston Martins have this as well, the DB6 exempted, and it seems that these cars are better for mid-speed motorway cruising rather than high-speed racing. After all, not all of their clients are racing drivers...

ohhh, so that is why almost all of the old muscle cars have gear ratios like that.., a short 2nd gear and a LOOOOONG 3rd gear..,

i hate cars who miss the powerband when upshifting..., who doesnt?? :grumpy:

Yeah, it seems silly, don't it? I don't know if with the GTX, if Polyphony goofed on the transmission, or whether that's the way it really was. :indiff:

While we're on the subject of Polyphony goofs: the '95 and '98 Acura Integra GS-R's have a goofy transmission. check it out: 3rd and 4th gear are almost exactly the same ratios!! This is truly a case of some computer programmer falling asleep at the wheel, as it woulda taken maybe a few minutes to correct this.

i agree.., GT2 has a lot of bugs and errors.., in a car with a goofy transmission, you still have to adjust the sliders on each gear after you adjust the overall slider on the bottom.., but look on the bright side, at least you get some experience on fine-tuning your transmission setup to get the right feel and taste you want.., relying on the auto-adjust slider gets you "nowhere" (you know what i mean), because most cars in GT2 have a "perfect" gear ratio (not too short nor too long, just the right feel) that you only need the bottom slider to blend the transmission with the engine power..,

Well I was talking about the stock transmission that comes with those Integras, like when you buy the car, you know? There's a couple of "Type R" Integras (that are actually GS-Rs with Type R engines) and there's a couple of less-powerful GS-R's. It's those 2 less powerful cars...try buying one of them but don't buy a transmission. 3rd & 4th gear are a few thousandths off from one another, but that's all. See what I mean?

Hm, but you have a PC, don't you :) Why can't you run it under the emulator? The graphics in ePSXe can be even better that on TV, especially if you spend a little time on modifying them.

Yeah, but aren't you forced to use the keyboard just to steer & stuff? :nervous: That would ruin it for me.

Well, I've been searching for a long time how to make my Logitech wheel and pedals work with GT2 and ePSXe... I must say, successless. Yes, I use the keyboard to steer, accelerate, brake etc., but I got used to it - it's OK now for me :)

Yeah, that's what Sucahyo does, too.

Yes, it's a good thing that GT2 has built in steering aids, we don't have to keep tapping steering button to avoid turning too much or too little, unlike pc car simulation game. Too bad PD screw up GT4 steering aids, I get counter steer problem in GT4.

i tried the emulator once, but i found it hard.., playing with an analog controller is a very different feeling from playing with a keyboard.., i got so much used to the controller that i do not feel like playing any GT game on a PC emulator.., *sigh* i really miss GT2.., :(

Well dude when are you gettin your PS1 fixed? Or when are you gettin a new one? Funny thing is I actually have a spare PS1, but I don't wanna sell it (in case my PS2 slim goes down for some reason and I need my GT fix). :dopey:

i dont know.., my dad is ultra-stingy (BTW i am still young).., i always ask him to get the PS1 fixed, but he does nothing.., *sigh*

yeah, but then, if i am to play GT2 in the PC, i would start from square one again.., i dont like to start over and over again, i restarted mt career in GT2 so many times now, because my memory card sometimes formats itself.., i would not feel like playing GT2 if ever i am to start over again.., *sigh*

For me it's the Vector M12 :
110 kph at first gear, 170 kph at second lol

Yeah, when I first bought it I laughed...like "damn, I wonder if I'll even hit 150 mph!" But then of course it can approach 220 in 3rd gear...

the Wiegert Vector is worse.., i can not exactly remember the speeds where it changes gears, but the thing i CAN remember is that the gears are ultra- W I D E..,,,

The Honda Beat gearbox is a bit to quick, also the Miata A-Spec, but thier low power makes them get away with it. The Miata shifted to 4th at 66MPH.

I also noticed that the Diahatsu Midget has a gearbox that limits it to 70MPH. :grumpy:
